CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina – Marist fell to #19 UNC 17-5 Friday evening.
Jake MacGregor was a force in the net throughout the game but Marist could not fully contain a hot Tar Heel offense. With the loss, Marist drops to 2-3 on the season.
- UNC struck first with a goal minutes into the game. Jojo Pirreca equalized, taking the feed from Michael Smith to score. The Tar Heels went on a 5-0 run to close out the quarter. The UNC defense limit offensive possessions, holding Marist to just five shots.
- Marist's defense shut down the Tar Heels in the second quarter, holding them to just one goal. Jake MacGregor made nine saves in the quarter and finished the half with 12. The Red Foxes struggled to get their offense going, finishing the first half 7-for-17 on clears.
- 22 seconds into the third quarter, Jake Weinman found Pirreca to score and cut UNC's lead 7-2. Seconds later, The Tar Heels would respond with a goal of their own to spark a 4-1 run to close out the quarter.
- UNC scored twice within 30 seconds to take a double digit lead. Weinman would find the back of the net with 7:51 to get the Red Foxes on the board for the quarter but UNC's offense continued to churn, firing off four more goals to close out the game.
- Smith, Pirreca and Weinman all had two points.
- JT Roselle had four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- MacGregor finished the day with 15 saves and three ground balls.
- UNC outshot Marist 53 to 27.
- Marist finished 11-of-23 on clears.
- Edward May recorded his first career goal.
Marist will open up home and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Saturday, March 16 at Tenney Stadium against Monmouth. Opening face-off is set for 1 PM.
