POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader with Iona on Monday at Gartland Field. The Red Foxes prevailed by a score of 1-0 in game one, but the Gaels scored two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh for a 5-3 victory in game two.
- In the bottom of the first, sophomore Caroline Baratta led off with a single. She advanced to second and then third on wild pitches. After junior Ali Milam drew a walk to cap a 10-pitch at bat, Baratta scampered home on the front of a double steal for the game's lone run.
- Freshman Calista Phippen improved to 10-1 with a three-hitter. Phippen struck out eight and walked only one. She did allow an Iona runner to reach second base the entire game.
- Freshman Kaley Coltrain reached base successfully in all three of her plate appearances. Coltrain went 2-for-2 with a walk.
- Milam doubled, walked, and had two stolen bases.
- Kara Zazzaro pitched a complete game for Iona. Zazzaro struck out seven and allowed four hits.
- In the bottom of the first, senior Brandi Coon's RBI single brought home Milam with the game's first run.
- In the top of the second, Iona's Jasmine Temple singled to lead off the inning. She later scored on an error, which tied the game at one.
- Red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf's solo homer gave Marist a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Baratta's homer an inning later gave the Red Foxes a two-run lead.
- Iona tied the game in the top of the sixth. Brianna Buck delivered a pinch-hit RBI single, and Hailey Thompson followed with a bases-loaded walk.
- Temple's two-run single in the seventh put Iona up for good. She finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
- Marnie Skinner went the first six innings for Iona for the win, and Zazzaro pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
- Marist is now 16-15 overall, and 3-1 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes had won five straight prior to their loss in game two.
- Iona is now 6-16 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Marist will host Hartford in a non-conference doubleheader, which is currently scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m.
