Marist Softball Prevails In Second Game At Army West Point

Gianelle Homers, Drives In Three In 5-1 Triumph

WEST POINT, New York – The Marist softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Army West Point on Wednesday. After falling 6-0 in the first game, the Red Foxes rebounded for a 5-1 victory in game two.
 
Game One - Army West Point 6,
Marist 0
  • The Black Knights scored twice in the first inning on an RBI double by Emily Ballesteros, and a sacrifice fly by Ally Snelling.
  • Grace Mattimore homered in back-to-back innings – a solo shot in the second, and a two-run homer – which advanced the Black Knights' lead to 5-0.
  • Taylor Drayton's solo homer in the fifth closed out the scoring.
  • Renee Poirier pitched a two-hitter with three strikeouts for Army West Point.
  • Senior Brandi Coon and junior Jade Sinskul each singled for the Red Foxes. Red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf was hit by two pitches.
  • Senior Megan Beiermeister allowed just one run and two hits in 3.2 innings of relief.
 
Game Two - Marist 5,
Army West Point 1
  • Marist scored two runs on an error in the second, which brought home senior Madison Lee and freshman Hailee Jantorno.
  • Freshman Morgan Gianelle's RBI single in the third brought home Ali Milam, and gave Marist a 3-0 lead.
  • Bianca Gonzalez scored on a groundout by Julia Wyatt in the bottom of the third.
  • The Red Foxes closed out the scoring on Gianelle's two-run homer in the seventh. She finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
  • Senior Brooke Peterson (3-3) went the first four innings for the win. Peterson gave up just two hits, did not walk anyone, and had one strikeout. The lone run she permitted was unearned, and she threw just 46 pitches.
  • Freshman Calista Phippen finished with three scoreless innings for her second save. Phippen struck out two, and needed just 36 pitches to get through her outing.
  • Taylor Drayton pitched a complete game for Army West Point.

  • Marist is now 22-17 on the season.
