POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Siena on Saturday at Gartland Field.
The Red Foxes won game one 6-0 behind a one-hitter from freshman
Calista Phippen, and a grand slam from freshman
Kaley Coltrain. Siena rebounded for a 5-3 victory in game two.
- With two outs in the bottom of the first, Coltrain's grand slam over the wall in right center staked Marist to a 4-0 advantage.
- The only other runs came in the fifth inning, when senior Madison Lee laced a two-run double to the gap in left center.
- Phippen struck out eight in her one-hitter, walked just one, and threw only 92 pitches. No Siena runner reached second base.
- Coltrain finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
- Senior Brandi Coon was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
- Brooke Hughes started and went the first five innings for Siena. She struck out five, and four of the six runs she allowed were unearned.
- A sacrifice fly by Amanda Dodson, followed by an RBI single by Neysa Ouellette, gave Siena a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
- The Saints added three runs in the second. Lauren Sabihon's RBI single was followed by Loryn DeFalco's two-run double.
- Senior Megan Beiermeister then came on in relief, and held Siena scoreless for the final 5.1. Beiermeister struck out four, and gave up just three hits.
- Junior Ali Milam drove in all three of Marist's run with a two-run double in the third, and an RBI single in the sixth. Milam finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
- Marist left 10 on base for the game. The Red Foxes left the bases full in the fifth and sixth innings.
- Senior Casey Page and freshman Hailee Jantorno each had two hits.
- Madysen Cossack went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk for Siena.
- Maddie McMahon pitched a complete game for the Saints and struck out nine.
- Marist is now 23-18 overall, and 8-2 in the MAAC.
- Siena is 10-16 overall, and 3-3 in conference play.
- Marist returns to action next week with a pair of MAAC doubleheaders.
- The Red Foxes will travel to Quinnipiac (Thursday, 2 p.m.), and then host first-place Monmouth (Saturday, noon).
