Marist Softball Sweeps Monmouth

Phippen Posts Game One Shutout, Red Foxes Rack Up 15 Hits In Game Two

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader from Monmouth on Friday at Gartland Field. The Red Foxes won 2-0 in game one, and 10-5 in the second contest.
 
Game One - Marist 2, Monmouth 0
  • The game's only runs came in the second inning. Senior Madison Lee singled down the left-field line with one out, which brought home senior Brandi Coon. Freshman Morgan Gianelle then hit a ground ball to first, and freshman Kaley Coltrain slid around a tag at the plate for the game's only other run.
  • Freshman Calista Phippen pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and just one walk. Phippen did not allow a Hawk to reach third base, and she struck out the side in the third inning. She improved to 15-3 and threw just 89 pitched.
  • Alyssa Irons pitched a complete game for Monmouth. Irons also allowed four hits and one walk. She struck out five.
  • Coon went 1-for-2 with a run, a walk scored, and a stolen base.
  • Monmouth's Kayla Rosado (2-for-3) was the only player in the game with two hits (2-for-3).
 
Game Two - Marist 10, Monmouth 5
  • Marist struck for four runs in the bottom of the first, all of which came with two outs. Coltrain and Lee had RBI infield singles, and two more runs scored on errors.
  • Erika Coreth's two-run homer in the top of the second, which hit the top of the fence and then bounced over, cut Marist's lead in half.
  • Marist's lead went back to four in the bottom of the second thanks to RBI singles by senior Casey Page and red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf.
  • The Red Foxes' advantage reached 9-2 in the fourth. Junior Ali Milam and Lee both had RBI doubles, and another run scored on an error.
  • The teams exchanged runs in the fifth. Monmouth's Lindsey Baron homered in the top half, and Milam had an RBI single in the bottom half.
  • Amber Wozniak's two-run homer in the top of the seventh closed out the scoring.
  • Marist had 15 hits, led by Page going 4-for-4 with a double, run scored, and RBI.
  • Megan Beiermeister (6-4) pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and only one walk allowed.
  • Baron went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
 
Notes
  • Marist has won the front end of all seven of its MAAC doubleheaders this season.
  • The Red Foxes' 15 hits in game two marked a season high. It was the sixth time this year Marist scored at least 10 runs in a game.
  • This was the first four-hit game of Page's collegiate career.
  • Marist and Monmouth are now tied in the MAAC standings at 11-3. Their winning percentages of .786 are just below Iona at .800 (8-2).

  • Marist improved to 26-19 overall and 11-3 in the MAAC.
  • Monmouth is now 27-14 overall and 11-3 in the MAAC.
