Marist Softball Locks Up Berth In MAAC Championship

Red Foxes Sweep Home Doubleheader From Rider

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team clinched a berth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship on Monday, and swept Rider in a doubleheader at Gartland Field. The Red Foxes prevailed 7-3 in game one, and 5-4 in game two.

Game One - Marist 7, Rider 3
  • The Red Foxes scored in the first at-bat as sophomore Caroline Baratta led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a single by senior Casey Page, and scored on a groundout by junior Ali Milam.
  • Marist scored twice in the third thanks to five straight two-out singles, which included RBIs from senior Brandi Coon and red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf.
  • Rider scored twice in the top of the fourth. However, sophomore Hunter Hand threw a runner out at the plate, and senior Kallen Leeseberg came in on relief to get a bases-loaded strikeout, which ended the rally.
  • Freshman Hailee Jantorno scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth, which increased Marist's lead to 4-2.
  • Freshman Kaley Coltrain's two-run homer and Baratta's RBI single upped the Red Foxes' lead to 7-2 in the fifth.
  • Elyse Cuttic's homer for Rider leading off the top of the sixth accounted for the game's final run.
  • Marist tied its season high with 15 hits. Baratta, Page, and Coltrain had three apiece.
  • Leeseberg earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief. She threw a three-pitch fifth inning which included a bunt single, a diving catch of a bunt by Oberdorf, and a 6-4-3 double play started by Baratta.
  • For Rider, Cuttic went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kelsey Marigliano went 3-for-4.

  • Lani Moreno's RBI single in the third increased the Broncs' lead to 2-0.
  • In the bottom of the third, Marist took a 3-2 lead thanks to an RBI double by Milam, and two-run double by Oberdorf. Milam added an RBI single in the fourth.
  • Rider's Shelby Miller homered in the top of the fifth, but Oberdorf homered in the bottom half of the inning, which maintained the Red Foxes' two-run lead.
  • Miller homered again with one out in the seventh, but Rider was unable to push the tying run across.
  • Oberdorf finished game two 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a run scored, and a stolen base. Milam was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
