Ausanio Wins 300th As Marist Sweeps Saint Peter’s

Red Foxes Prevail 12-1 & 6-0

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Saint Peter's on Saturday. The Red Foxes won game one by a score of 12-1 in five innings, and game two with a 6-0 shutout.

The sweep gave head coach Joe Ausanio 300 wins in his career.

Game One - Marist 12, Saint Peter's 1 (5 inn.)
  • The Red Foxes scored three runs in the top of the first, all with two outs. Red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf's single brought home senior Casey Page, who started the rally with a one-out bunt single. Two batters later, senior Madison Lee delivered a two-run single, which scored junior Ali Milam and Oberdorf.
  • Marist added six runs in the third. The inning included a two-run homer by Milam, an RBI single by freshman Morgan Gianelle, and a three-run shot by sophomore Hunter Hand.
  • Alyssa Mido's homer in the bottom of the third cut the Peacocks' deficit to 9-1.
  • Marist added three runs in the top of the fourth. Lee had an RBI single, and two runs scored on errors.
  • Freshman Calista Phippen (11-2) went the first three innings for the win. Mido's homer was the only baserunner Phippen allowed. Phippen struck out eight. Senior Kallen Leeseberg finished with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.
  • Every Red Fox in the starting lineup reached base safely. Hand drove in four runs, while Lee had three RBIs. Oberdorf scored three runs.

Game Two - Marist 6, Saint Peter's 0
  • The game was scoreless until the top of the third, when the Red Foxes took a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Caroline Baratta scored on an error. Freshman Kaley Coltrain drew a bases-loaded walk, which forced home Milam.
  • Saint Peter's loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but senior Megan Beiermeister induced an infield pop-up and fielder's choice to keep the Peacocks off the scoreboard.
  • Coltrain's three-run homer in the fifth gave Marist a 5-0 lead.
  • Saint Peter's had runners on first and second with none out in the fifth. Phippen entered the game, and retired the next three hitters, two via strikeout.
  • Junior Jade Sinskul delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh, which brought home Oberdorf and made the score 6-0.
  • Beiermeister (4-3) picked up the win, and Phippen earned her first collegiate save with seven strikeouts in three perfect innings.
  • Coltrain finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Baratta and senior Brandi Coon each had two hits, while Milam scored two runs.
  • Sydney Senerchia pitched a complete game for Saint Peter's, and Katie Sciglimpaglia went 2-for-3.

Notes
  • Hand's homer in game one was the first of her collegiate career.
  • In her last three appearances, Phippen has struck out 22 in 11 innings.
  • Ausanio started as head coach at Marist in 2009. In 10+ seasons, he has had seven winning seasons, four years with at least 30 wins, a program-record 45 victories in 2016, and two MAAC championships.
