Marist Softball Runs Winning Streak To Four

Red Foxes Complete Perfect Weekend With Sweep At Manhattan

RIVERDALE, New York – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader from Manhattan at Gaelic Park on Sunday. The Red Foxes won the first game, 10-1 in six innings, and earned a 4-0 shutout in game two.
 
Game One - Marist 10, Manhattan 1 (6 inn.)
  • Marist scored twice in the top of the first. Sophomore Caroline Baratta led off with a ground-rule double, and scored on a single by senior Brandi Coon. Coon then took home on the front end of a double steal with red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf, which put Marist up 2-0.
  • In the top of the third, senior Casey Page reached on a one-out infield single, and junior Ali Milam followed with a two-run homer over the wall in center. This gave the Red Foxes a 4-0 advantage.
  • Freshman Morgan Gianelle's solo homer in the fourth put Marist up 5-0.
  • In the top of the fifth, Marist expanded its lead to 6-0 as a ground-rule double by Coon scored Page.
  • Freshman Calista Phippen held the Jaspers without a hit for the first 4.1 innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Christine Gebhardt doubled, which was followed by a Daniela Chiorazzi RBI single to make the score 6-1.
  • In the Marist half of the sixth, sophomore Hunter Hand led off with a homer. Coon added a two-run single, and Oberdorf had a sacrifice fly as Marist's lead reached 10-1.
  • Phippen finished with 13 strikeouts and a two-hitter.
  • Coon went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Page scored three runs and went 2-for-2.
 
Game Two - Marist 4, Manhattan 0
  • Manhattan loaded the bases with one out in the second, but senior Megan Beiermeister quieted the rally with a strikeout and a lineout.
  • Marist opened the scoring with two runs in the third. Coon's RBI single scored Page, and Oberdorf's sacrifice fly plated Milam.
  • In the top of the fourth, Gianelle started a rally with a one-out double, and Baratta drove her in with a two-out single which expanded Marist's lead to 3-0.
  • Manhattan had runners on first and second with two outs in the fifth, but Oberdorf fielded a ground ball, stepped on third and threw to first for an inning-ending double play.
  • In the top of the sixth, Page's two-out single brought home Madison Lee, which gave the Red Foxes a 4-0 advantage.
  • Beiermeister went the distance on a four-hitter. She struck out a season-high seven and walked just one.
  • Baratta, Page, and Coon had two hits apiece.
  • Gebhardt went 2-for-3 for Manhattan.
 
Stats & Notes
  • In Phippen's four appearances this week, she struck out 35 in 17 innings, and allowed just eight hits and three runs.
  • Beiermeister was unscored upon in her three outings this week, covering 13 innings. Her shutout in game two was the fourth of her career.
  • On the day, Marist's 1-4 hitters (Baratta, Page, Milam, Coon) went 14-for-24 with 10 runs scored and nine RBIs.
  • In the doubleheader, Phippen and Beiermeister combined for 20 strikeouts and allowed just six hits and two walks in 13 innings.
  • The road team has won the last five Marist-Manhattan regular-season games.
  • Marist is 10-2 since returning from its West Coast trip over Spring Break.
 
Records
  • Marist is 21-16 overall and 7-1 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes have won four straight following their sweep at Saint Peter's on Saturday.
  • Manhattan is 12-19 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
