Men's Lacrosse Falls to UMBC

A Strong Second Half Proves the Difference in the Contest

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist men's lacrosse fell to UMBC 14-8 at Tenney Stadium in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The Red Foxes started the game hot, but the Retrievers defense stepped up and held Marist to two goals in the second half while adding eight of their own.
 
SUMMARY
  • Marist took the early lead with goals from Evan Gagne and Jake Weinman in the first three minutes. UMBC came back to equalize but a goal from Jojo Pirreca scored in the final seconds of the first quarter to take a 4-3 lead.
  • Peyton Smith won the opening face-off of the second quarter, passed the ball to Pirreca who dished it to Jamison Embury for a goal to take a 5-3 lead in the first nine seconds of the second quarter. UMBC and Marist traded a couple more goals and Marist took a 6-5 lead into the second half.
  • UMBC's defense shut Marist down in the third quarter while adding four goals. The Retrievers held Marist to three shots on goals.
  • Back to back goals from Weinman breathed life into the Marist offense as they trailed 11-8 with 6:36. But UMBC was able to score two quick goals to put the game out of reach for Marist.
 
STATS
  • Weinman had a hat trick to fuel Marist's offense. Jamison Embury had three points from two goals and an assist.
  • Peyton Smith went 18-for-26 from the face-off and picked up nine ground balls. JT Roselle played great at the wings and had eight ground balls.
  • After being inserted into the game near the start of the second quarter, Tommy Linger held Marist to three more goals in the game.
  • Marist was perfect on clears going 17-for-17.
  • The defense held UMBC to 0-2 on man-up offense.
 
NOTES
  • Marist is 1-1 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
  • The Red Foxes broke the record of an opening round NCAA men's lacrosse game with 2134 fans in attendance.
