Women’s Soccer Defeats Towson In Season Opener

Three different goal scorers back up Renaud’s shutout.

TOWSON, Maryland – Three Red Foxes found the back of the net, junior goalkeeper Abigail Renaud (Glastonbury, CT / Glastonbury High School) made six saves in a shutout, and Marist dispatched Towson 3-0 on the road in the 2019 season opener.
 
With the win, the Red Foxes start the season 1-0, while Towson drops to 0-2 on the season.

THE SUMMARY
  • Sophomore forward Victoria Colatosti (Northport, NY / Northport High School) got the scoring started in the 17th minute when Marist's pressure on the Towson defense led to a turnover.
  • Renaud's first save came on an acrobatic dive to her right, denying Demi Pierre of a point-blank opportunity with about nine minutes left until halftime.
  • After senior captain Bianca Furci (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa High School) changed the field to put the Red Foxes on offense, sophomore midfielder Abby Murphy (Medway, MA / Medway High School) fed her sprinting classmate, forward Kaylin Sperley (Vancouver, WA / Prairie High School). Sperley converted in the 66th minute.
  • In the 83rd minute, freshman forward Leah Barbieri (Glastonbury, CT / Glastonbury High School) worked inside the corner and flicked a shot over goalkeeper Lindsey Pazdziorko.
THE STATS
  • Marist outshot Towson in shots (21-15), shots on goal (12-6), and corner kicks (4-1).
  • Colatosti and freshman forward Brooke Cergol (Mt. Sinai, NY / Mt. Sinai High School) tied for the team lead with three shots, while the latter had a team-best three shots on goal.
  • Twelve Red Foxes registered a shot; seven recorded multiple shots.
  • All told, 20 Red Foxes saw playing time.
THE NOTES
  • Sperley and Barbieri tallied their first collegiate goals.
  • Murphy added her first-career assist.
  • This is Renaud's fourth individual shutout in her Marist tenure, and fifth overall.
  • Marist has won three of its last four season openers.
