SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's annual Honor Roll dinner was held on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Marist's inductees were Dave Magarity and Danielle (Galarneau) Donohue.
The honorees were recognized at the "The MAAC Experience" exhibit. The 24-member class features two representatives from each MAAC school and two from the conference.
Dave Magarity (1986-2004)
Dave Magarity served as head coach for the Marist men's basketball program for 18 seasons, and is the program's all-time leader in victories with 253. In his first season at the helm in 1986-87, he guided the Red Foxes to the ECAC Metro championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Magarity and his staff were instrumental in the development of Rik Smits, who became the program's first NBA Draft choice. Smits was selected second overall in 1988 by the Indiana Pacers, and went on to enjoy a 12-year NBA career. In 1996, Magarity guided the Red Foxes to a 22-win season and a berth in the Postseason NIT for the first time in their history. Marist moved to the MAAC on Magarity's watch for the 1997-98 season, and he guided the team to a share of its first regular-season conference title in 2001-02. A highly respected coach by his peers and foes, Magarity was a three-time conference Coach of the Year, and a three-time NABC District Coach of the Year. He was awarded the Mike Cohen "Good Guy" award by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association in 1988.
Danielle (Galarneau) Donohue (1987-91)
Danielle Donohue, known as Danielle Galarneau in her playing days, was a stalwart in the frontcourt for the Marist women's basketball program in the late 1980s and early 1990s. A 6-foot-1 native of Troy, New York, Galarneau was a four-year starter whose statistics improved every season. This culminated in a senior season in which she averaged 15.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Galarneau played in 106 career games, with 90 starts. She scored 1,141 points in her collegiate career, a total which ranked second in program history at the time of her graduation, and is 17th all-time through this past season. She hauled in 833 career rebounds, the most in program history at the end of her playing career, and a mark which is currently in fourth place at Marist. On Feb. 23, 1991, Galarneau set a program record which remains intact today when she drained 15 free throws in a contest at LIU.
