STORRS, Connecticut – In the opening tournament of the 2019-20 season, Marist Men's Tennis posted wins against UConn, Sacred Heart, and Merrimack to go 3-0 in the UConn Invitational.
The Red Foxes defeated the Huskies 7-0 and won 5-2 against the Pioneers and the Warriors.
- The event operated under modified, blind dual match rules.
- Singles matches were two sets, with a 10-game tiebreaker for the third set.
- Doubles were an eight-game pro set that also had the 10-point tiebreaker.
- Marist was originally scheduled to play UConn and Merirmack on Saturday, but had to push the match with the Warriors to Sunday due to inclement weather.
- Marist swept the doubles to collect the team point.
- All six players added wins in straight sets.
- In the first position, Schouten went 6-0 and 6-3 in his bout with Zheng.
- In the sixth flight, Kian Yazdi also blanked Yu in the first set at 6-0, then concluded the match at 6-4.
- Oxner (6-3, 6-2 over Scheetz) and Sowinski (6-3, 6-3 over Riemann) were victorious in the fourth and fifth positions.
- Lopez and Bonorino earned their first singles wins as Red Foxes at second and third in the lineup.
- Marist earned the doubles point thanks to Oxner and Lopez (8-6) as well as Schouten and Sequerth (8-3).
- The Red Foxes went 4-2 in singles versus the Pioneers.
- Oxner defeated Khan 6-1, 6-4 for the first Marist victory in the dual match.
- After Bonorino triumphed 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 to give each team two singles wins, Yazdi clinched the Marist victory, taking down Roessel 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets.
- Sowinski wrapped up the match by rallying from a 4-6 loss in the first set, securing the second set 6-0 and 10-8 in the tiebreaker.
- The Red Foxes earned the team doubles point with a sweep.
- Oxner and Lopez defeated Davydov and Koch 6-4.
- Schouten and Sequerth topped Garcia and Mancini 6-2.
- Sowinski and Bonorino handled Fedorov and Mackey 6-1.
- Schouten, Lopez, and Oxner won consecutively in the first, second, and third flights, respectively, to win the match for Marist.
- Schouten defeated Davydov 6-4, 6-2.
- Lopez rebounded from 2-6 in the first set to go 6-2, 10-8 over Garcia.
- Oxner beat Fedorov 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
- Sequerth picked up a win on Singer 6-3, 6-4.
"The fall is akin to our spring training, and even though Grapefruit League standings don't count, it's very beneficial to establish winning habits," commented Director of Tennis
Gary Sussman. "We played a lot of high-level matches this weekend, showed a great deal of resilience, and bonded well as a team on our first road trip."
The Red and White gear up for the Quinnipiac Invitational, hosted by fellow MAAC school Quinnipiac, in Hamden, CT from Friday, September 20 to Sunday, September 22.
