Kelchner Posts Career-High 11 Saves In Narrow Loss

WEST POINT, New York – Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner made a career-high 11 saves in her first-career start, but a second-half Army West Point goal sent Marist to a 1-0 loss on Wednesday evening to close out the 2019 non-conference slate.

The Red Foxes fall to 3-5 on the season, while the Black Knights jump to 3-3-2.

THE SUMMARY
  • Kelchner corralled her first save in the sixth minute on a lower-left shot from Lauren Drysdale.
  • Freshman defender Samantha Sturno got in front of a cross and headed it away to avoid damage with a couple minutes on the clock in the first half.
  • In a chaotic scene in the 44th minute, Kelchner extended her left leg to deny another Garay shot. The ball trickled to Army's Morgan Walsh, but senior defender Bianca Furci blocked her shot at the last moment.
  • Army broke the ice in the 68th minute. Alyssa Carfagno and Furci went to possess a 50-50 ball, but the former got the first touch and used a deflection to put it into the left of the net.
  • Kelchner's final save came on a leaping attempt to turn aside Dara Murray with 1:58 left.

THE STATS
  • Kelchner collected five saves in the first and six in the second half.
  • Sophomore forward Victoria Colatosti led the team and tied a season-high with four shots.
  • Eight Red Foxes played the full 90 minutes.
  • Army held the advantage in shots and corner kicks.

THE NOTES
  • Kelchner surpassed her career-high in saves, previously at five on October 15, 2018 against Dartmouth.
  • The last Marist goalkeeper to make 11 saves was Ashley Houghton vs. Maine on September 11, 2015.
  • Kelchner is the first Red Fox to reach 10 saves since Francesca Guzzo hit that mark on August 24, 2018, also against the Black Bears.
  • In addition to Kelchner's first-ever start, junior defender Britt Van Lenten made her Red Fox debut in the starting XI.
  • Marist finishes 1-2 against Patriot League foes in 2019.

THE NEXT ONE

The Red Foxes welcome Iona to Tenney Stadium on Sunday, September 22 at 2 p.m. for the 2019 MAAC opener. Marist handled the Gaels 2-1 in last year's bout.
