Women’s Soccer Ties Iona In MAAC Opener

Svensson Jumps To Second In All-Time Assists List

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist Women's Soccer and Iona tallied second-half goals to form a 1-1 stalemate in the MAAC opener for both sides on Sunday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.
 
In the effort, senior defender Alexa Svensson notched her 19th career assist to move into second place on Marist's all-time list.
 
The decision puts both teams at 0-0-1 to start conference play. Marist now sits a 3-5-1, while Iona is 2-6-2.
 
THE GOAL
 
THE SUMMARY
  • Marist started with four corner kicks within the game's first eight minutes. Sophomore midfielder Abby Murphy registering the first shot on goal.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner collected her first save in the 25th minute, lining up an Amber Crispin shot in front of the goal.
  • In the 63rd minute, the Red Foxes earned a corner kick. Svensson placed it inside the box, and redshirt sophomore midfielder Kristen Prevosto headed it in the left side of the net to put the Red and White up 1-0.
  • Iona answered when Samantha Hogan drew a foul inside the box in the 82nd minute. Crispin checked in, and buried the penalty kick in the lower-right corner to even the score.
  • Marist's best chance in the first overtime came when Svensson laced a direct kick on goal from 35 yards out that Iona's Emma Havrilla gobbled up.
 
THE STATS
  • Marist had the edge in shots, 16-15. The Red Foxes held a sizable advantage with 12 corner kicks compared to Iona's two.
  • Junior defender Britt Van Lenten, celebrating her birthday, tied for a team-best three shots with freshman forward Brooke Cergol.
  • Kelchner recorded seven saves in the full 110 minutes.
  • The Red Foxes spent 67 percent of their possession in their attacking zone.
 
PLAY WITH PRIDE
  • The Red Foxes celebrated Play With Pride, a United Soccer Coaches initiative providing awareness for respect of athletes and coaches from all backgrounds of sexual orientation and gender identities.
  • Marist began warmups wearing tie-dye pride shirts, and wore rainbow shoelaces and hair ties during the game.
 
THE NOTES
  • Svensson surpasses Amanda Epstein, '14 and now moves into a tie for second place with Samantha Panzner, '13 at 19 career helpers.
  • Kelchner and Van Lenten started for the second-consecutive game, while Cergol appeared in the starting XI for the first time in her career.
  • Junior Lauren Couto and sophomore Haley Guertin saw a season-high in minutes at 48 and 29, respectively.
  • Eight Red Foxes played over 100 minutes.
  • Marist has earned double digits in shots in seven of their nine games.

The Red and White travels down to West Long Branch, NJ to face three-time defending MAAC champion Monmouth on Saturday, September 28 at 6 p.m.
