ALBANY, New York - The Marist men's basketball team was defeated by Siena, 70-57, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at the Times Union Center on Friday night.
The Red Foxes trailed by as much as 19 in the first half, and cut it to three in the second half, but were unable to draw any closer.
- Siena scored the game's first nine points, which led to a Marist timeout at the 16:15 mark.
- Tyler Sagl then hit three three-pointers in a span of 2:49 to bring the Red Foxes to within three, but the Saints answered by scoring 16 straight to go up 19.
- Marist closed the first half on an 11-3 run, which included five more points from Sagl in a 19-second span. Siena led 38-27 after the first 20 minutes.
- A Tyler Saint-Furcy three-point play brought the Red Foxes to within three at 45-42 with 13:57 remaining. This capped a span of 9:15 between the end of the first half and start of the second half in which Marist outscored Siena by a 26-10 margin.
- After a three-point play by Sagl cut Marist's deficit to four with 9:54 left, the Saints answered with a 10-0 run as they held the Red Foxes scoreless for a span of 6:11.
- Siena led by double digits for the final 6:16.
- Sagl led the Red Foxes with 17 points, and hit four three-pointers.
- Saint-Furcy finished with 10 points, four rebounds, and three blocked shots.
- Matt Herasme had nine points, and led the Red Foxes with eight rebounds and three steals.
- Siena's Elijah Burns led all scorers with 19 points.
- Siena's Jalen Pickett had 12 points, a game-high eight assists, and six rebounds.
- Marist shot .328 (21-for-64) from the field, while Siena shot .442 (23-for-52).
- Marist made all nine of its free-throw attempts, while Siena was 21-for-24 from the stripe.
- In his last two games, Sagl has averaged 20.0 points and drained nine three-pointers in 19 tries (.474).
- Herasme now has 12 steals in his last five games.
- Saint-Furcy set a career high in blocked shots.
- This was the 85th meeting between the teams. Siena leads the series, 58-27, and has won seven straight against Marist at the Times Union Center.
- For the second straight game, Marist's coaches wore sneakers with their suits in support of Coaches vs. Cancer week.
"They were being really physical with us," head coach
John Dunne said. "When we were disciplined, and we were getting good cuts and good movement off the ball, we were getting good looks. At one point, I thought we had a few that just didn't drop, but give Siena credit, they played really well tonight."
- Marist is now 4-14 overall and 3-6 in the MAAC.
- Siena improved to 8-9 on the season and 4-4 in conference play.
- Marist heads to western New York for two games next weekend.
- The Red Foxes will face Niagara on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m., followed by Canisius on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.
