Piotr Sowinski scored a victory in the sixth flight in singles play, but that was all Marist could muster in a 6-1 defeat to St. John's on Saturday afternoon at West Point, NY.
The loss is Marist's first in dual match competition in the 2019-20 campaign, setting their record to 1-1. The Red Storm boosted its record to 3-0. The match served as the Red Foxes' 2020 spring opener.
- Sowinski and sophomore Jack Sequerth started off the day with a 6-3 triumph over Giuseppe De Camelis and Dylan Loru in the third position.
- In the second flight, senior Lars Schouten and junior Nestor Giribet Lopez narrowly fell to Charlie James and Igor Maslov 4-6.
- The tie-breaking battle for the double point came down to senior Chris Gladden and junior John Oxner, facing Ognjen Trejgut and Ignacio Garcia. In the top flight, St. John's nabbed the 6-4 win.
- Maslov swept sophomore Augusto Gonzalez Bonorino in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0m in the No. 5 singles.
- Oxner fell to De Camelis 0-6, 2-6 in the fourth flight.
- Making his season debut after a study abroad trip in the fall, Gladden dropped the No. 2 flight to Garcia, 0-6, 0-6.
- Giribet Lopez was competitive with Trejgut in the third position, but the latter was victorious, 7-5, 6-3.
- Sowinski took the first set over Loru in the sixth flight 6-4. He then outlasted Loru 7-6 (7-5) for Marist's lone victory on the day.
- Facing Udayan Bhakar in the first position, Schouten took his opponent down to the wire after falling in the first set, 4-6. He then forced a set tiebreak, but fell 7-6 (7-9) to give Bhakar the win.
