POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - Former Marist baseball standout Kevin McCarthy has signed a minor-league contract with the Boston Red Sox. A right-handed relief pitcher, McCarthy has appeared in 169 games over the past five Major League Baseball seasons for the Kansas City Royals.
McCarthy was chosen by the Royals in the 16
th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. His contract was selected by the Royals on Sept. 6, 2016, and McCarthy made his major league debut just three days later against the Chicago White Sox. McCarthy retired Tim Anderson, the only batter he faced in his debut, as he became the first former Marist baseball player to appear in an MLB game. The following night, McCarthy earned his first major league win against the White Sox.

McCarthy pitched for the Marist baseball team from 2011-13. He was named MAAC Co-Relief Pitcher of the Year and Second Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2013, and was a MAAC All-Academic Team selection in both 2012 and 2013.
In his three seasons with the Red Foxes, McCarthy appeared in 49 games. He went 5-4 with 12 saves and a 4.38 ERA, and struck out 98 in 113.1 innings. His save total still ranks fourth in program history.

In his five seasons with Kansas City, McCarthy posted a 3.80 earned run average and an 11-6 record. In 191.2 total innings, he struck out 120 batters against 61 walks.
McCarthy set career highs for appearances (65), wins (five), innings pitched (72), and strikeouts (46) in 2018. He recorded his first major league save in 2019.
In the 2020 season, he appeared in five games in MLB's shortened season. He had a 4.50 ERA in six innings.
