POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist freshman point guard
Hakim Byrd was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Byrd averaged a team-leading 13.5 points per game as Marist opened conference play with a split at Canisius last weekend. He shot .524 (11-for-21) from the field and .375 (3-for-8) from three-point range in the two contests.
On Friday, Dec. 11, Byrd scored a career-high 17 points, and also contributed three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. In the Red Foxes' victory the following night, Byrd delivered a three-point play with 35.1 seconds remaining which put the team ahead for good. He tied for the team high with 10 points in that game.
The honor is the first of Byrd's career, and the first conference weekly award garnered by the Red Foxes this season.
Marist (3-1 overall, 1-1 MAAC) returns to action with a two-game series at conference rival Manhattan (1-1, 1-1) this weekend. The Red Foxes and Jaspers will tip off at 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale.
