NASHVILLE, Tennessee – The Marist softball day won both of its games on the final day of the Bruin Challenge on Sunday. The Red Foxes earned a 4-3 win over Northern Kentucky in their first game of the day, and a 5-3 triumph over Belmont in game two.
Marist won its final three games of the Bruin Challenge, and the Red Foxes return home with a 3-1 record.
- Ava Lawson's two-run homer gave the Norse a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
- Marist tied the game after single runs in the third and fourth. Claire Oberdorf's single brought home Shea Walsh in the third, and Caroline Baratta's RBI double scored Hunter Hand and tied the score at two the following inning.
- Oberdorf drew a walk on an eight-pitch at-bat to start the fifth, and Kaley Coltrain followed with a two-run home to give the Red Foxes the lead for good.
- Northern Kentucky loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Calista Phippen escaped the jam with a sacrifice fly and strikeout to end the game.
- Nicole Teague (1-0) allowed just three hits over the first five innings, and Phippen got the last six outs for her first save of the season.
- Baratta went 3-for-4.
- In the top of the second, the Red Foxes struck first as Alyssa Yarem started a two-out rally with a single, and scored from first on Morgan Gianelle's RBI double.
- Oberdorf homered in the third, which gave Marist a 2-0 lead.
- Brooklin Lee's two-run infield single tied the game in the bottom half of the third.
- Baratta answered with a two-run infield single of her own the fourth, as Marist went up 4-2.
- Oberdorf added another solo homer in the fifth.
- Cheyenne Cavanaugh's RBI single brought Belmont to within 5-3 in the seventh, and put the tying run on base. However, Kiley Myers then induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
- Meghan Haff (1-0) earned the win in her first collegiate appearance. Haff struck out six in 6.1, and Myers then picked up her first collegiate save.
- Baratta, Oberdorf, and Ali Milam all finished with two hits apiece.
- Brittany Kennett pitched a complete game and struck out 14 for Belmont.
- Marist resumes play next weekend with five games in three days at the Razorback Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas.
- Marist will face Arkansas and Boston University on Friday (5:45/8 p.m. Eastern), South Dakota State and Monday on Saturday (5:45/8 p.m.), and Arkansas on Sunday (12:45 p.m. Eastern).
