Second Half Lifts Marist Past Siena For 20th Win

Rebekah Hand Ties Career-High With 32 Points

ALBANY, New York - Behind a career-high tying 32 points from senior captain Rebekah Hand and a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double from redshirt senior captain Alana Gilmer, Marist pulled away from Siena in the second half for a 78-55 victory, the sixth win in a row for the Red Foxes, on Sunday afternoon at the Times-Union Center.

Marist collects its 20th win of the season, the 15th time in program history the Red Foxes have reached that mark, and stand at 13-2 in the MAAC. The Saints drop their second straight game and drop to 6-8 in conference play, and 8-15 overall.

Hand totaled 14 field goals, tied for second-most in a single game in program history, and had 21 points in the first half.

Marist started the game on a 9-0 run and eventually went up 19-4, but the Saints fired back with a 19-0 run, and led 33-32 at halftime.

The Red Foxes answered with a 24-10 third quarter. Gilmer led the charge with 10 points and eight rebounds in the frame. 

Sabrina Piper led Siena with 18 points.
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Marist started the game on a 9-0 run, with Rebekah Hand and Gilmer providing the points, to force a Siena timeout just 2:19 in.
  • Hand was already up to 10 points at the 5:05 mark in the first quarter following a right wing three-pointer.
  • Senior guard Hannah Hand knocked down a corner three to make it 19-4.
  • Siena then scored the final 15 points in the stanza.
  • The Red Foxes went scoreless for &:14 before Rebekah Hand sank a 10-foot jumper with 6:38 left in the second.
  • Each team traded buckets through the final 4:24 of the first half. The Saints still maintained the lead throughout the stretch.
  • Marist took its first lead since the first quarter off Gilmer free throws, then junior forward Willow Duffell hit a baseline jumper after a Siena basket for a 36-35 lead 1:36 out of halftime.
  • Two-point buckets from Rebekah Hand, sophomore guard Sarah Barcello, and Gilmer gave Marist a 42-37 cushion at the under-five media timeout.
  • The Red Foxes ended the third on a 12-2 run, ignited by triples from redshirt junior forward Molly Smith and Hannah Hand. Marist was up 56-43 heading into the fourth.
  • Redshirt senior captain Grace Vander Weide's left wing three with 5:12 remaining staked Marist to a 65-49 lead.
  • Rebekah Hand eclipsed the 30-point plateau with a triple less than a minute later.
STATS
  • Marist shot 48.5 percent as a team, including 64.3 percent in the fourth quarter.
  • Twenty-one of Rebekah Hand's 32 points came in the first half.
  • The Red Foxes assisted on 24 of their 32 field goals. It is the 14th time this season Marist has earned 20-plus assists.
  • Vander Weide tallied 11 dimes, the fourth time this season she's reached double figures.
  • Marist pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and had 22 second-chance points. As a whole, the Red and White won the rebounding battle 39-21.
  • Gilmer's career-high 12 boards led all players.
  • Duffell notched nine rebounds and a team-best three blocks and four steals.
  • After scoring 12 points in the first quarter, Piper was limited to six in the final three stanzas.
NOTES
  • Rebekah Hand's 32 points is tied for 10th-most in a single game in program history. She shares the effort with her 32-point effort against Saint Peter's on March 2, 2017.
  • She is also one for four Red Foxes to hit 14 baskets in a game. Gilmer also had 14 buckets in the win over Quinnipiac on January 23.
  • Gilmer moves into ninth place all-time in career scoring, passing Erica Allenspach with 1,417 points.
  • The Red and White have not lost a game this season when registering 20 or more assists.
  • The Red Foxes capture their third-straight 20-win season. All 15 of Marist's 20-win campaigns have come under Head Coach Brian Giorgis.
  • Marist has now won five straight over Siena. All five of those wins have been by 15 points or higher.
