WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Marist softball team dropped two games to open Seahawk Softball Classic on Friday. The Red Foxes were defeated by Toledo in the morning, 4-1, and Robert Morris, 9-4, in the evening.
Marist now stands at 4-7 on the season.
- Marist's Calista Phippen did not allow a hit in the first three innings.
- Toledo scored first in the top of the fourth, when Morgan Paaverud's two-out single brought home Anna Dixon.
- Marist answered in the sixth. Claire Oberdorf led off with a single, advanced to second on an infield single by Ali Milam, and scored on a base hit by Jade Sinskul.
- Toledo's Samantha Golden hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh.
- Marist brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to score.
- Toledo outhit Marist, 7-6, but the Red Foxes left nine runners on base.
- Erin Hunt pitched a complete game for Toledo and struck out 11.
- Phippen struck out four in 6.2 for the Red Foxes, who received two hits from Milam.
- The Colonials opened the scoring with eight runs in the third inning on the strength of nine hits and with the benefit of three Marist errors.
- Shea Walsh's two-run double got Marist on the scoreboard in the fourth.
- Briana Bunner extended Robert Morris' lead with a solo homer in her team's half of the fourth.
- Caroline Baratta delivered a two-run single in the sixth for Marist's final two runs.
- Kiley Myers started and had three strikeouts for the Red Foxes. Nicole Teague relieved and allowed one run over the final 3.1.
- Dana Vatakis went the distance for Robert Morris and struck out six.
Marist plays two games on Saturday at the Seahawk Softball Challenge against host UNC Wilmington (12:30 p.m.) and Robert Morris (5:30 p.m.).
