Women's Basketball Finishes Quinnipiac Sweep

Vander Weide's 21 Points Lead Marist To 9th Straight Win

HAMDEN, Connecticut - Redshirt senior captain Grace Vander Weide recorded a season-high 21 points, nine rebounds, and three steals to propel Marist to its first regular season sweep of Quinnipiac in six years with a 64-51 victory on Saturday afternoon at People's United Center.

The Red Foxes collect their ninth-consecutive win to improve to 16-2 in the MAAC, and 23-4 overall. The Bobcats fall to 10-8 in MAAC play and 13-14 on the season.

Redshirt senior captain Alana Gilmer totaled 16 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Fellow captain Rebekah Hand added 12 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. As a team, Marist snagged 43 rebounds.

Mackenzie Dewees was Quinnipiac's leading scorer with 11 points. Sajada Bonner chipped in 10 points, while Paige Warfel had a game-high 18 boards.
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Quinnipiac raced out to a 7-2 lead to start the game. At that point, Gilmer zipped a pass to Vander Weide at the right block, who pump faked and put the layup off glass and in.
  • The pair then buried three-pointers to give Marist a 13-9 advantage with 1:14 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • After nailing a jumper from the extended foul line, Gilmer went high-low to junior forward Willow Duffell for an easy lay-in, putting Marist up 20-16 just 1:46 into the second.
  • Rebekah Hand drained consecutive three-pointers, the latter a transition bucket that put the Foxes up 26-17 and forced a Bobcat timeout with 5:12 until halftime.
  • Gilmer and Vander Weide hit triples as well to cap an extended 16-3 Marist run, making the score 32-19.
  • With the score 36-25 in favor of the visitors at halftime, the Red Foxes went on a 9-2 run. Vander Weide slipped past the defense on a backdoor cut, while Duffell and Gilmer added buckets on passes from Rebekah Hand.
  • Marist's largest lead was 47-28 halfway through the third, but Quinnipiac rattled off an 11-0 run to cut it to 47-39.
  • In response, Vander Weide knocked down a crossover three-pointer from the right wing to close the third.
  • Just 2:36 into the fourth, Rebekah Hand spun right to get open on the left elbow and hit a floater to push the lead to 52-41.
  • With the clock reading 3:04 and Marist up 10, sophomore guard Sarah Barcello canned a left-corner three-pointer to make it 57-44.
STATS
  • Marist eclipsed 40 rebounds for the second game in a row, corralling 43 to Quinnipiac's 37.
  • In the second quarter, the Red and White went 8-13 (61.5 percent).
  • As a team, Marist assisted on 16 of its 21 baskets.
  • All 21 of the Red Foxes' field goals came from the starting five.
  • Quinnipiac was limited to 29.5 percent shooting, including 21.1 percent from downtown.
  • Vander Weide's nine boards and Hand's seven dishes led the Foxes.
  • Duffell swatted three shots.
NOTES
  • Vander Weide now has three career 20-point efforts. Two have come against Quinnipiac, and the 21 points on Saturday were her most in a regular season MAAC game.
  • Gilmer surpassed Corielle Yarde for sixth place on Marist's all-time scoring list. She now has 1,472 points in a Marist uniform.
  • Hand leaped over Casey Dulin for eighth in career assists. The Argyle, TX native now has 347 helpers.
  • This was the 17th game this season where each captain scored in double figures.
  • Marist last swept Quinnipiac in the regular season in 2013-14. It was the team's first win in Hamden, CT since December 6, 2013.
  • In its first Leap Day game since 2004, Marist improved to 5-0 all-time on leap days.
