Marist Softball Wins Twice in Texas

Red Foxes Defeat Delaware State, Fairleigh Dickinson

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Marist softball team picked up a pair of victories on Friday in the opening day of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, hosted by Texas Tech. The Red Foxes defeated Delaware State, 8-1, in their first game of the day, and Fairleigh Dickinson by a 9-0 count in game two.
 
Ali Milam homered in each game, and drove in six on the day. Milam and Claire Oberdorf each had five hits. Pitchers Calista Phippen and Kiley Myers combined for 15 strikeouts while allowing just six hits, two walks, and one run.
 
The Red Foxes evened their record at 8-8 on the season.
 
Game One - Marist 8, Delaware State 1
  • Milam's first-inning single brought home Caroline Baratta and opened the scoring.
  • Delaware State's Jasmine Melgoza doubled and later scored on an error, which tied the game in the bottom of the first.
  • Alyssa Yarem's second-inning homer gave the Red Foxes the lead for good.
  • Marist extended its lead to 4-1 in the fourth on a solo homer by Milam and RBI triple by Hannah Brock, which brought home Hailee Jantorno.
  • The Red Foxes scored twice more in the fifth. Sam Freeland came home on an RBI double by Oberdorf, who scored herself on a single by Milam.
  • Marist closed out the scoring with two in the sixth on a wild pitch and subsequent error.
  • Milam finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Baratta and Freeland each had two hits and two runs scored.
  • Phippen tossed a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and just one walk.
  • Hannah Crumblish went 3-for-3 for Delaware State.
 
Game Two - Marist 9, FDU 0 (6 inn.)
  • Morgan Gianelle's second-inning bunt single brought home Jantorno with the game's first run.
  • Oberdorf's third-inning RBI triple brought home Baratta, and Milam's subsequent RBI groundout scored Oberdorf.
  • Marist added two more runs in the fifth. Oberdorf scored on a passed ball, and Shea Walsh's groundout plated Milam.
  • The Red Foxes closed out the game with a four-run sixth, a rally that started with two outs. Baratta scored following a bunt single by Freeland, who then scored on an Oberdorf double. Milam then ended the game with a two-run homer.
  • Kiley Myers tossed a one-hitter for the Red Foxes. She struck out six and walked just one.
  • Oberdorf went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Milam was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Madison Emerson singled for Fairleigh Dickinson.
 
Notes
  • With her six RBIs today, Milam vaulted from ninth place in program history into a tie for fifth with 119 in her career.
  • Oberdorf moved into eighth place in program history with her sixth career triple.
  • Both of Myers' victories this season have been shutouts. She tossed a four-hitter against Green Bay in her collegiate debut on Feb. 15.
