Marist Athletics Weekly Preview

12 Teams Will Be In Action Over Next Five Days

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist Athletics has a very busy week ahead with 16 total contests spread throughout this week by 12 of our teams. This includes home games from men's soccer Wednesday and Saturday, men's and women's swimming & diving opening their seasons on Friday, and wrapped up by volleyball on Saturday.
 
Women's soccer takes on MAAC foe Rider, men's soccer takes on MAAC opponents Rider and Manhattan, men's tennis is at the ITA Northeast Regionals as well as the Army Invite match, women's tennis is at the Army Invite match, men and women's swimming & diving take on MAAC rival Canisius, football takes on PFL opponent Dayton, volleyball plays MAAC rival Siena, men and women's cross country are at the Fall Foliage Invitational, and men and women's rowing open their fall seasons at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta.
 
Women's Soccer

  • Women's soccer (4-4-2) is coming off a tough loss to Siena on the Red Foxes' senior night, where 10 seniors on the team were celebrated for their achievements and commitment to the program.
  • In total, the Red Foxes racked up 15 shots throughout the game, 6 of which were on target, but nothing went in the back of the net. Senior goalkeeper for Marist Natalie Kelchner totaled seven saves on the night.
  • The game was almost tied in the 83rd minute as senior midfielder Abby Murphy crossed it to junior forward Brooke Cergol, but Siena goalkeeper Brooke Boermeester was there to make the save.
  • Seniors Brinley ChabotHaley GuertinTaylor Hennig, and Kayla Afflitto made their first-career starts for senior night to celebrate their success and commitment to the program. Chabot and Afflitto stepped onto the field for the first time this season. The senior class had secured 27 total wins in around 3 full seasons and going 15-87-3 in MAAC play.
  • This was the Red Foxes first home loss of the season. They are now 3-1-1 at Tenney Stadium this year, and 3-2-1 in MAAC play.
  • Marist travels to Rider on Wednesday to play yet another MAAC rival. The Red Foxes have a 12-8-1 all-time record against the Broncs since 2001 with a 7-4 home record and a 4-3-1 away record.
Men's Soccer

  • Men's soccer (5-6-1) is coming off a 2-1 loss this past Saturday against Saint Peter's.
  • Junior forward Stefan Copetti was able to keep his points streak going with yet another goal against the Peacocks in the 87th minute. This brought his points streak to eight games in a row with his sixth goal on the year.
  • Marist had the chance to tie the game in the final minutes of play, but junior midfielder  Henrique Cruz was denied late and senior midfielder Jacob Schulman sailed a shot high above the net with seven seconds in regulation.
  • In total the Red Foxes had 22 shots on the night with Copetti taking 5 of them, and senior goalkeeper Samuel Ilin had three saves.
  • Marist looks to bounce back from the 2-game skid this Wednesday against the Rider Broncs at 7 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. The team is 10-7-2 all-time since 2001 against Rider with a 5-3-1 home record and 5-4-1 away record, and their 5th MAAC opponent in a row.
  • In addition, the men's team will be hosting Manhattan on Saturday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night. The Red Foxes are 12-6-2 since 2001 against the Jaspers with a 7-1-1 home record and a road record of 4-5-1.
Men's Tennis
  • Men's tennis has its first and second invitational of the season this week.
  • They are at the ITA Northeast Regionals on Thursday, and the Army Invite on Friday and Saturday.
  • The men's team has been very successful at the Regionals and look to repeat that success behind senior captain Jack Sequerth.
Women's Tennis
  • Women's tennis is coming off a rain shortened invitational at Hofstra, where sophomore Deana Giambo stood out in singles.
  • Giambo advanced to the final flight with two wins in the process. She eventually fell to FDU's Amina Lasheen in the finals in a three-set tiebreak.
  • Andriana Zaphiris and Ellen Zurieck completed in doubles together and had secured victory against LIU's Jorjollani and Watton. Their second match got cut short due to bad weather.
Swimming & Diving
  • The men's and women's teams have their first meet this year against Canisius this Friday.
  • The men's team is coming off an 11-2 season where they were 5-1 in conference competition in 2019-20.
  • The women's team had similar success in 2019-20, as they were 8-5 on the season and were 4-1 in conference competition.
  • The men's team is 8-1 all-time against Canisius with a perfect home record of 4-0 and a road record of 4-1.
  • The women's team are also 8-1 against Canisius since 2011, with a home record of 3-1 and a perfect road record of 5-0.
  • A season preview will run on Thursday.
Football

  • Football (2-2) is coming off a route of Stetson in front of the home crowd this past Saturday by a score of 34-3, which brought their PFL record to 2-0 on the year.
  • Red-shirt senior quarterback Austin Day threw for 276 yards and 2 touchdowns on the day while completing 22 of his total 31 passes, throwing at 76% completion rate.
  • Hunter Cobb found the end zone from one yard out with 1:33 to go in the first quarter, and Kyle Coffindaffer returned an interception 31 yards for a pick-six, his first-career interception.
  • Dwayne Menders found the end zone in the second quarter from a bullet by Day to extend Marist's lead to 24-0 right before Stetson got on the board with a 27-yard field goal. The second half was more of the same with Stetson being shutout and redshirt freshman tight end Brandon Lysick caught his first career touchdown on a 6-yard pass from Day.
  • On Sunday, Mike Arrington was honored as PFL Defensive Player of the Week after a 14-tackle performance against Stetson. It was the first time the Red Foxes held their opponent out of the end zone since 2013.
  • The Red Foxes look to carry on their success as they travel to Dayton, Ohio as the play the Flyers at noon.
  • The team is 2-9 all-time against Dayton since 2009 with a 1-4 home record and a 1-5 road record.
Volleyball

  • Volleyball (11-9 overall, 6-3 MAAC) is coming off their second win in a row this past weekend with a 3-1 set victory against Niagara.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Newblatt has been playing unreal, breaking the single match kill record 16 hours after she broke it previously. Newblatt notched 34 kills against Niagara, with a hitting percentage of .311, and looks to keep her phenomenal play rolling. Newblatt was honored as AVCA National Player of the Week and MAAC Player of the Week on Tuesday.
  • On Tuesday, Morgan Owens was named MAAC Libero of the Week for the fourth time this season. She was honored as MAAC Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Gabriella Heimbauer joined in on the action with a career best 26 kills on the day and hitting .246.
  • Sophomore setter Anne Mahler led Marist with a career-high 34 assists on Sunday.
  • Marist looks to keep it rolling as they host Siena on Saturday at 1 p.m. for their Pink Out Day. The Red Foxes are 22-36 all-time since 1984 against the Saints with an 11-11 record at home and an away record of 18-20. Marist took a 3-0 win last time these two squared off.
 
Cross Country
  • The Red Foxes are coming off a 9th place Brown Division men's team finish and a 31st place Gold Division finish by the women's team at the Paul Short Run almost two weeks ago.
  • Chris Praxis of the men's team led the way for the Red Foxes with a time of 25:31.5 on the 8km course, which was best for a 30th overall finish. Teammates Brendan Dearie and Gabe Rodriguez were not far behind with times of 25:55.7 and 26:03.0 respectively, which placed them at 65th overall and 75th overall.
  • Hayley Collins of the women's team was the leader for the Red Foxes as she finished with a time of 21:42.4 which put her at 100th overall over the 6km race. Teammates Tori Mariano and Gianna Mastromatteo placed 124th and 148th respectively with times of 21:51.6 and 22:04.7.
  • This will be the last meet for both teams prior to the MAAC Championships on Oct. 30.
Rowing
  • Both the men's and women's teams begin their season this Sunday when the head over the Worcester, Massachusetts at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta.
  • The men's team is coming off a 19th overall national ranking at the IRA Championships last year with a total of 143 points.
  • The women's team had a historic finish last year in the NCAA Championships. The Second Varsity 8 had the highest finish of any Marist crew in the Championships, where they were the first boat to knock off an opponent, which was Gonzaga. They ended up placing 21st in the country, where the Varsity 8 and 4 crews finished 22nd in the nation.
  • Both teams look to carry the success of last year into this season.
