Fairfield Tops Marist Volleyball

van der Merwe Leads Red Foxes with 12 Kills

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist volleyball team fell at home to first-place Fairfield, 3-0, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at McCann Arena on Thursday night. The Stags won by scores of 26-24, 25-17, 25-18.
 
Summary
  • Anne Mahler's ace gave Marist a 15-12 lead in the first set, but coming out of the media timeout, Fairfield reeled off five straight points.
  • The Red Foxes responded with four straight points, and then an ace from McKinley Fox gave Marist a 22-19 advantage
  • Fairfield battled back, and with the set tied at 24 apiece, scored back-to-back points for a 26-24 first-set victory.
  • The second set went back-and-forth early, but after Marist took a 13-10 lead, Fairfield ran off seven straight points and held the lead for good. The Stags took the second set, 25-17.
  • With the third set tied at four apiece, Fairfield scored three straight points to take the lead for good. A 5-0 run which included two aces from Jillian Hanna brought the Red Foxes to within 15-13, but they came no closer as Fairfield prevailed 25-18 in the third set.

  • Sasha van der Merwe led Marist with 12 kills and 10 digs.
  • McKinley Fox had a team-high 27 assists.
  • KJ Johnson had a match-high 16 kills for Fairfield, and hit .286.
  • Manuela Nicolini had 32 assists, 10 digs, five kills, and two blocks for the Stags.
  • Fairfield hit .320 for the match, while Marist hit .136.
 
Records
  • Fairfield remains perfect in the MAAC at 11-0, and is 16-6 overall.
  • Marist is 12-10 overall and 7-4 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes entered the match having won seven out of eight.
