NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist volleyball team won a closely-contested five-set match at Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Iona on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes prevailed 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 24-26, 15-10.
 

Summary

• In set one, Marist fell behind 6-1 early but fought back to take a 13-11 lead. With the score tied 20-20, Iona scored back-to-back points, and kept the lead en route to a 25-23 victory.
• Marist never trailed in set two. The Red Foxes scored six straight points to jump out to a 7-1 lead, a stretch that included back-to-back kills by both Gabriella Heimbauer and Sasha van der Merwe.
• Iona reeled off two separate 4-0 runs early in set three, but a 5-0 spurt for the Red Foxes tied it at 15 apiece. After back-to-back Iona points, the Red Foxes closed the set on a 10-5 run.
• Marist jumped out to a 12-5 lead in set four, but five straight Iona points tied the set at 22 all. The Red Foxes served for set point at 24-23, but the Gaels scored three straight points to send the match to the decisive fifth set.
• In the fifth set, Marist erased an early 2-1 deficit with four straight points, and never looked back. The Red Foxes score the final three points of the match. Heimbauer had six kills in the decisive set alone.
