POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist volleyball team won a five-set match against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival on Saturday at McCann Arena. The Red Foxes prevailed 14-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-25, 15-13.
 

Summary

• A 5-0 run midway through the first set allowed the Broncs to take control, and they won 25-14. Rider hit .462 in the first set, while Marist hit -.103.
• Rider led early in the second set. Marist closed the gap, and then took the lead for good with a 6-0 run which turned a 16-15 deficit into a 21-16 advantage.
• Marist never trailed in the third set. Although the set was tied at 15 apiece, the Red Foxes used a 5-0 spurt to take control. This run included two kills apiece from Sasha van der Merwe and Jordan Newblatt. Marist hit .459 in the third set.
• Marist built a 9-6 lead in the fourth set, but Rider countered with a 14-3 run as the Broncs sent the match to a decisive fifth set.
• Rider scored the first three points of the fifth set, and led 12-10 before the Red Foxes scored four points in a row. Newblatt had a kill and two aces in this run. Rider fought off one match point, but van der Merwe ended the match with a kill.

• Gabriella Heimbauer led Marist with 17 kills
• Newblatt (16 kills, 13 digs) and van der Merwe (12 kills, team-high 16 digs) both had double-doubles.
• Gabby Murray had a team-best five blocks.
• McKinley Fox totaled 45 assists, eight digs, and three blocks.
• Morgan Romano had 24 kills and hit .431 for Rider.

Notes

• Both Marist-Rider matches this season went five sets, with each team winning at home.
• Marist is now 6-2 in five-set matches this season.
• The Red Foxes have now won three in a row for the third time this season, and have won 10 out of 12.
• van der Merwe's 16 digs were a career high. She has at least 10 digs in each of her last four matches.

• Marist is now 15-10 overall and 10-4 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes are now in second place in the MAAC by a half-game over Rider.
• The Broncs are 12-11 overall and 9-4 in conference play.
