Women’s Basketball Falls to American in Home Opener

Fisher Scores Career-High 25

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling to American by a final score of 59-52 at McCann Arena.
 
Summary
  • Ivy Bales had three triples in the first quarter to give American an 18-5 lead. Marist was held scoreless for over three minutes in the first quarter.
  • Kiara Fisher had a three-pointer and seven points in the first half, and Zaria Shazer had nine points to spark a 15-4 run for Marist to close out the half.

  • This was the first time Marist head coach Brian Giorgis coached against American head coach Megan Gebbia since Gebbia was on Giorgis' staff from 2003-13. In that time, the Red Foxes won 10 MAAC regular-season championship, nine tournament championships, five NCAA Tournament games (including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2007), and posted a record of 264-64. The American staff includes assistant coach Nikki Flores (Class of 2008) and Emily Stallings (Class of 2012).
  • The 2020-21 Marist women's basketball team received its championship rings prior to Friday night's game.
  • Shazer has double-doubles in both of Marist's first two games.
  • Fisher's point total was a career high.
