Women’s Basketball Defeats Vermont

Fisher, Shazer Lead Red Foxes to 67-50 Triumph

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women's basketball team defeated Vermont, 67-50, at McCann Arena on Sunday afternoon.
 
Summary
  • Three-pointers by Samantha Bailey and Anabel Ellison staked the Red Foxes to an early 6-0 lead as the Red Foxes held the Catamounts scoreless for the first 3:46.
  • Kiara Fisher and Zaria Shazer each added six points in the first quarter as Marist led 20-11 after 10 minutes.
  • Between the end of the first quarter and start of the second, an 11-0 run gave the Red Foxes an 18-point lead.
  • Marist's lead reached as high as 20 in the first half, and the Red Foxes took a 38-20 lead to the locker room.
  • An 11-0 run in the third quarter extended Marist's lead to its largest margin of the day, 26.
  • Three consecutive three-pointers by Vermont's Jane McCauley cut Marist's lead to 16 late in the third quarter. The Red Foxes took a 55-37 lead into the final period.
  • Another three-pointer by McCauley brought Vermont within 15, but the Catamounts did not come any closer. Marist's lead reached as high as 22 in the last quarter.
 
Stats
  • Fisher led all scorers with 17 points. She shot 8-for-10 from the field as she added eight assists and five rebounds.
  • Shazer had another double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Red Foxes were +31 in her 29 minutes on the floor.
  • Marist shot .453 (29-for-64) from the field and Vermont to .281 (16-for-57).
  • McCauley led Vermont with 16 points.
 
Notes
  • This marked the first time Marist head coach Brian Giorgis coached against Vermont head coach Alisa Kresge, who played for Giorgis from 2003-07 and was an assistant coach for him from 2009-16.
  • Shazer notched double-doubles in all three of Marist's games, and her 13 rebounds tied a career high.
  • Marist made one change to its starting lineup from its first two games, with Anabel Ellison starting and Emma Wax coming off the bench. Both Wax (10 points) and Ellison (eight) had career highs in scoring.
  • Marist is now 4-1 all-time against Vermont.
