Football Rolls Past Presbyterian

Red Foxes Rack Up 57 Points, Force Six Turnovers

CLINTON, South Carolina – The Marist football team cruised to a 57-32 triumph at Presbyterian in Pioneer Football League play on Saturday.
 
Summary
  • The Red Foxes trailed 14-13 after the first quarter, but then proceeded to reel off 37 unanswered points in 16:51 of game time between the second and third quarters.
  • In the final six minutes of the second quarter, the Red Foxes scored 20 points on a Mekhai Johnson 22-yard touchdown run and Austin Day's touchdown passes to Sydney Person and Brett Landis. Marist led 33-14 at halftime.
  • Hunter Cobb added a three-yard touchdown run 41 seconds into the third quarter. A 28-yard field goal by Luke Paladino and 10-yard scoring run by Johnson gave Marist a 50-14 lead entering the fourth quarter.
  • Marist closed out its scoring on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Julian McGarvey to Antoine Morales at the 13:17 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Presbyterian added two late touchdown passes by Ren Hefley to make the final margin 57-32.

  • Marist forced six turnovers (five interceptions, one fumble recovery) and recorded five sacks. The Red Foxes did not commit a turnover.
  • Jayden Johnson led the Red Foxes with 11 tackles.
  • Arthur Pinckney had six tackles, two interceptions, one-and-a-half tackles for loss, and a sack.
  • Day completed 15 of 26 passes for 265 yards and four touchdowns. He added 47 yards on the ground.
  • There were 1,020 yards of total offense in the game. Presbyterian outgained Marist 536-484, but ran 96 plays to the Red Foxes' 55. Marist's 57 points came with just 22:16 of possession.
 
Notes
  • Marist's 57 points mark the second-highest total in program's Division I history, and the most in 23 years. The Red Foxes scored 60 against Canisius in 1998.
  • Marist's six turnovers forced were its most since also forcing six against Mercer in 2013.
  • Marist has clinched at least a .500 record this season and a winning record in PFL play.
  • Person, Morales, and Matt Stianche all scored their first receiving touchdowns.
  • Pinckney's two interceptions were the first of his career. Paul Olivett's interception was also his first.
  • Clayborne Fields III has now intercepted passes in back-to-back weeks for the second time this year. His four interceptions lead the Red Foxes.

  • Marist is 5-4 on the season and 5-2 in PFL play.
  • Presbyterian is 2-8 overall and 0-7 in league play.
