Football Downed by Butler on Senior Day

Red Foxes Finish Season at 5-5 Overall, 5-3 in PFL

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team fell short to Butler, 28-21, in its season finale at Tenney Stadium on Saturday.
 
Summary
First Quarter
The Red Foxes opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown pass from Austin Day to Wyatt McMahon with 3:32 left. Marist led 7-0 at the end of the first.
 
Second Quarter
Butler had a quick response early in the quarter, as Joey Suchy rushed it up the middle to it at 7-7. Marist's Austin Day scored on a 14-yard run with 7:21 left in the quarter to put Marist back on top, 14-7. However, Butler quarterback Bret Bushka tied the score with a rushing touchdown with 2:08 left in the first half, and the score was tied 14-14 at halftime.
 
Third Quarter
With 12:21 left in the quarter, Day found Scott Scherzer for a 42-yard completion to the Butler 1. However, the Bulldogs recovered a fumble on the next play, and started a drive the lasted the remainder of the quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
Suchy's second rushing touchdown with 13:31 to play punctuated a 23-play, 99-yard drive that took 12:58. The Bulldogs took a 28-14 lead when Trey Mason intercepted a pass and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown with 5:22 left. With three seconds left, Day's long pass up the right sideline found Brett Landis with three seconds left. However, the Red Foxes were unable to recover the ensuing onside kick.
 
Stats
  • Kyle Fleitman led Marist with 12 tackles.
  • Day finished 20 for 27 for 208 yards through the air, with two touchdowns and one interception. He also had a team-high 31 rushing yards.
  • Suchy finished with 75 rushing yards.
 
Notes
  • Marist finished the season at 5-5 overall and 5-3 in the PFL. It was the Red Foxes' best overall winning percentage in eight years.
