Win/Tie for Men’s Soccer Clinches #1 Seed in MAAC Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – As the calendar has worked into November, fall sports are heading toward playoff seasons, while winter sports are revving up.
 
Men's soccer plays for an opportunity to clinch the #1 seed on Wednesday, and opens MAAC championship play at Tenney Stadium on Sunday. Football has a home contest against Drake on Saturday. Volleyball has two matches this weekend in its next-to-last week of the regular season. Swimming & diving is back in action at Fairfield. Men's rowing wraps up its fall season at Princeton.
 
Men's Soccer
at Fairfield, 7 p.m. Wednesday: Watch (ESPN+) | Live Stats
 
  • The Red Foxes enter the contest in first place in the MAAC with 19 points at 6-2-1 (9-6-2 overall).
  • A win or tie at Fairfield clinches the #1 seed in the MAAC Championships for the Red Foxes.
  • Marist had a bye this past Saturday, but defeated Niagara 3-2 in double overtime last Wednesday. Huib Achterkamp delivered the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 102nd minute.
  • Marist takes a five-match unbeaten streak into the contest, as the Red Foxes are 4-0-1 in their last five.
  • With 16 points (5-3-1 MAAC), Fairfield enters Wednesday in a three-way tie for second.
  • The Red Foxes are guaranteed to host a MAAC Championship quarterfinal round match on Sunday at Tenney Stadium. The opponent will be determined after Wednesday's results.
 
 
Football

  • The Red Foxes stand at 3-4 overall and 3-2 in PFL play.
  • Last week, Marist fell at St. Thomas by a score of 27-7. Teddy Wright had a career-high 13 tackles for the Red Foxes.
  • This week, Marist will host its first United We Stand game.
  • Hunter Cobb and Dwayne Menders lead the Red Foxes with three touchdowns apiece. Cobb (368 yards, 5.0 yards per carry) leads Marist in rushing, while Menders leads Marist in receptions (43) and receiving yards (501).
  • Mike Arrington leads Marist in tackles (66), tackles for loss (7.5), and sacks (4).
  • Drake is 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the PFL. After having a bye week last week and a cancellation due to COVID-19 protocols, this is the Bulldogs' first game since Oct. 16.

  • The Red Foxes have won four straight, and 11 of their last 13.
  • Marist sits in second place at 11-4 in the MAAC. At 16-10 overall, this is the Red Foxes' highest win total in six years.
  • Marist's last three matches of the regular season are all on the road, starting with two matches in Connecticut this weekend before finishing at Siena on Nov. 13.
  • Quinnipiac is 7-7 in the MAAC and 8-15 overall. The Red Foxes defeated the Bobcats 3-1 in Poughkeepsie on Sept. 29 behind double-doubles from Madelyn Waumans (21 kills, 13 digs) and Jordan Newblatt (18 kills, 10 digs).
  • Fairfield is in first place at 13-1 in the MAAC and 18-7 overall. The Stags defeated the Red Foxes 3-0 at McCann Arena on Oct. 21. Sasha van der Merwe led Marist with 12 kills and 10 digs.
 
 
Swimming & Diving
at Fairfield, 1 p.m. Saturday
 
  • The Marist women's team is 2-1 overall and 2-0 against MAAC foes.
  • The team is coming off a 163-125 victory over Rider last Saturday. Emma Butzler won three events, and Grace Reeves was named MAAC Female Diver of the Week after winning both boards.
  • The Marist men's team is 2-1 overall and 1-1 against MAAC competition.
  • The Red Foxes fell to Rider, 169-125, last Saturday. Ahmed Sallam captured two individual events.
  • Fairfield's women's and men's teams are both 2-1 this season in dual meets.
 
 
Men's Rowing
at Princeton Chase, Sunday
 
  • The Red Foxes close out a successful fall season on Sunday at the Princeton Chase.
  • This is Marist's fourth regatta of the fall season.
  • Last weekend, Marist competed at the Head of the Fish in Saratoga Springs, and took home five medals. This included a first-place finish for the B Boat in the Open/Collegiate Pair with Gavin Crouch and Nathan Jalbert.
