Men’s Soccer Advances to MAAC Semifinals

Galloway Scores Twice, Adds Assist in 3-0 Triumph

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The top-seeded Marist men's soccer team used a dominant second half to take care of business in the quarterfinal round of the MAAC Championship.
 
Led by graduate midfielder Kyle Galloway, who tallied two goals and one assist, the Red Foxes defeated the eighth-seeded Manhattan Jaspers 3-0 on Sunday evening in front of Tenney Stadium crowd of 1,342.
 
Goals
  • The two sides went into the break tied 0-0, but Marist quickly got things going in the second half as Galloway scored his first goal in the 51st minute. He knocked it in after an initial cross into the box by Joe Mac.

 
  • In the 59th minute, Galloway scored his second off another assist from Mac.
  • In the 78th minute, the Red Foxes got their third and final goal after Galloway sent a cross into the box where Liam Salmon was unmarked and able to blast the ball into the back of the net.
 

 
First Half
  • Marist's first opportunity came when Kyle Galloway dropped it back to Antek Sienkiel inside the box, but he sent it over the net in the ninth minute.
  • The Red Foxes got their first shot on goal off the head of Stefan Copetti in the 20th minute, but Danny DiMarco was there for the stop.
  • The Red Foxes continued to put on the pressure as three minutes later Siekiel ripped a shot that forced DiMarco to make a diving save.
  • In the 33rd minute Sienkiel sent a cross into Galloway who was able to settle it and fire a shot, but it went just wide of the goal as it hit the side netting.
  • With two minutes remaining the Red Foxes got three corner kicks in a row, but were unable to capitalize as the two teams headed into the break 0-0.
 
Second Half
  • In the 51st minute, Mac sent a cross into the box and DiMarco was unable to hold on as Galloway came running in and blasted it into the net to give the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead.
  • Two minutes later Galloway beat his defender and ripped a shot outside the box, but DiMarco was able to make a diving save.
  • In the 59th minute Joe Mac made a great run down the sideline and slid the ball into box right to the feet of Galloway who calmly placed it in the back of the net for his second goal.
  • The Jaspers got their first opportunity on a shot by Brandon Joseph-Buadi, but Samuel Ilin was there to make his first save of the night in the 60th minute.
  • In the 78th minute Galloway sent a cross into the box where Liam Salmon was unmarked and able to fire the ball into the back of the net to give the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead.
 
Stats
  • The Red Foxes outshot the Jaspers 26-11
  • Corners also favored Marist, 9-4.
  • Marist held possession for 53% of the game
  • The Red Foxes' defense recorded their eighth shutout of the season, and Ilin recorded his sixth clean sheet.
  • This was Galloway's first two-goal match of the season. It was the second time this year he factored in all three Marist goals. He previous accomplished the feat at Canisius on Sept. 29 (one goal, two assists).
 
Up Next
  • Marist advances to the semifinal round, where the Red Foxes will host seventh-seeded Monmouth. The Hawks advanced after a 1-0 win at second-seeded Saint Peter's on Saturday.
  • The Red Foxes prevailed at Monmouth 1-0 on Oct. 20 thanks to a goal by Galloway.
  • This will be the first meeting between Marist and Monmouth in the MAAC Championship.
