Women’s Basketball Earns First MAAC Victory

Red Foxes Topple Iona, 61-49

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women's basketball team earned its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the season on Monday night with a 61-49 triumph over Iona at McCann Arena.
 
Summary
  • Iona's Juana Camilion scored the game's first two points 28 seconds in, but Marist answered with an 11-0 run as the Gaels were held scoreless for 6:09.
  • Iona then held Marist scoreless for nearly four-and-a-half minutes, but Emma Wax beat the first quarter buzzer with a shot from just over the halfcourt line. Wax's three gave the Red Foxes a 14-7 lead after 10 minutes.


 
  • Kiara Fisher scored seven straight Marist points as the Red Foxes extended their advantage to as much as 17 in the second quarter. Marist led 29-17 at halftime.
  • A three-pointer by Juilanna Bonilla with 1:25 left in the third quarter gave the Red Foxes a 21-point lead, their highest of the game. Marist led 48-29 after 30 minutes.
  • A 9-2 Iona run cut the Gaels' deficit to 11 with 1:16 remaining, but they came no closer as the Red Foxes earned a 12-point victory.

  • Fisher led all scorers with 17 points. She also contributed six assists, four steals, and three rebounds.
  • Trinasia Kennedy had 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

  • Marist held Juana Camilion, Iona's leading scorer, to seven points on 3-for-11 shooting. Camiliion also contributed game highs of seven assists and four steals, and tied Shazer for the game high with seven rebounds.

  • Marist shot 5-for-11 (.455) from three-point range, and Iona shot 8-for-25 (.320) from deep.

  • The 49 points allowed by Marist marked a season low.
  • Marist has won six straight against Iona, and four straight at home against the Gaels.
  • Fisher set a career high with her four steals. She has seven steals in Marist's two MAAC contests.
  • Fisher has scored in double figures in four straight games, and leads the team with seven double-figure scoring games this season.
  • After an 8-for-10 performance on Monday, Marist is now 46-for-59 (.780) from the free-throw line in its last four games.
