POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's lacrosse team opened its 2021 campaign on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Detroit Mercy Titans 15-11. A heroic fourth quarter from
Vito Musso, in whoich he scored four goals, including three straight, helped propel the Red Foxes to victory.
With the win, Marist improves to 1-0, while the Titans fall to 0-1. This game does not count towards the MAAC standings.
- At the end of the first quarter Marist held a 5-1 lead over the Titans after a hot start from Jamison Embury and Jojo Pirrecca.
- In a high scoring second quarter, Detroit Mercy evened the score at 6-6 about midway through. After the teams exchanged a goal each, Embury found Jon Constant who then found the back of the net with 14 seconds left in the half to give Marist an 8-7 advantage.
- The Embury twins had a twin-nection right out of the gates in the third quarter, as Jamison found Hunter to put the Red Foxes in front 9-7.
- Marist went a little cold in the third, as the Titan's defense got tighter and tighter. Detroit Mercy evened the score at nine heading into the fourth quarter.
- Vito Musso put the game away in the fourth quarter, scoring four of his five total goals on the day in the period, including three in a row, helping rally Marist to a 15-11 victory.
- Jamison Embury led the Red Foxes in points with six. Musso's five goals were also a game high.
- Brett Erskine led the way for the Titans with a hat trick and three assists for three total points.
- Andrew Evans went 12-27 in fac eoffs in his first start of the season, and had a game-high eight ground balls.
- Sam Ahlgrim led Marist with two caused turnovers.
- Total shots in the game were even at 44, but Detroit Mercy held the edge in shots on goal, 25-24.
- Marist went 3-7 in extra man opportunities, while the Titans went 3-8.
- In his first career game and start Logan Covey notched 14 saves. He is the first freshman goalkeeper to start a game for Marist since Brian Corrigan in 2014 and Dave Scarcello in 2012. Covey made more saves than both, combined.
- JT Roselle had one caused turnover today, which moved him into a tie for 10th place on the program's all-time caused turnovers list.
- Musso's five goals marked a new career-high for the senior.
- The Embury twins combined for nine points today, the most they have scored as a pair in a single game.
- Kellen Pulera and Andrew Evans each had an assist today, which were the first assists in their respective careers. Evans also had a career-high eight ground balls.
The Red Foxes return to Tenney Stadium in a week, taking on the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Marc. 13. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
