POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist softball team dropped both games in their season-opening doubleheader against Monmouth at Gartland Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Foxes fell in game one 4-3 in eight innings. The Red Foxes dropped game two by a score of 4-1.
- The game's first run came by a solo home run Ali Milam in the second inning with one out.
- The Red Foxes added to their lead in the fifth inning as Shea Walsh scored on a single from Hunter Hand.
- Monmouth rallied in the 7th inning as Lindsey Barron tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run home run off of Calista Phippen.
- Monmouth's Deangie Jimenez drove in two runs with a single to center field, giving the Hawks a 4-2 lead in the top of the eight.
- Marist tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth, as Miah McDonald's single scored Caroline Baratta, which brought the Red Foxes within one run. Marist had first and second with one out, but was unable to tie the game.
- Marist's Calista Phippen pitched all eight innings, striking out four.
- Monmouth's Alyssa Irons struck out eight in eight innings pitched.
- Marist outhit Monmouth, 9-6.
- Monmouth's Deangie Jimenez belted a solo home run on the second pitch of the fifth inning, which broke a scoreless tie and was the Hawks' first hit off Marist's Kiley Myers.
- In the seventh inning, Monmouth's Morgan Maziarz hit a three-run homer with two outs to put Monmouth up 4-0.
- Alyssa Yarem cut into Monmouth's lead, slamming a home run into center field while pinch-hitting in the bottom of the seventh.
- Myers pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four runs while striking out five batters.
- Monmouth's Kylie Gletow pitched six-plus innings, allowing one run while striking out two. After Yarem's homer, Irons got the final three outs for the save.
- Marist left a total of seven runners on base. Monmouth left three runners on base.
- Monmouth is now 10-4.
- Marist starts the season 0-2.
Marist and Monmouth will play another doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon.
