Softball Splits Doubleheader With Monmouth

Phippen Shines in Game One Triumph

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Monmouth on Sunday at Gartland Field. The Red Foxes earned a 2-1 walk-off triumph in game one, but the Hawks prevailed 7-2 in game two.
 
Game One Summary
  • Danielle Dominik's bases-loaded walk put Monmouth up 1-0 in the first, as Lindsey Baron scored.
  • For Marist, Calista Phippen relieved Meghan Haff with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the first. Phippen induced a fly out to leave the bases loaded.
  • After allowing a two-out single to Erika Coreth in the top of the third, Phippen retired 10 straight Hawks.
  • The Red Foxes left the bases loaded in the fifth inning. They remained down 1-0 until Kaley Coltrain hit a home run on an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall with one out in the sixth.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Hannah Brock led off with a walk, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hailee Jantorno. With two outs, Sam Freeland reached on a throwing error, which brought Brock home from second with the winning run.
  • Phippen (1-1) finished with six strikeouts, no walks, and just two hits allowed in 6.1 innings of relief.
  • Alyssa Irons (7-3) pitched a complete game for Monmouth. She allowed four hits, two walks, and one earned run. Irons struck out four.
 
Game Two Summary
  • Monmouth struck for four runs in the top of the first. The Hawks had one only one hit, but drew four walks and were aided by two Marist errors.
  • Tommi Stowers homered to center field in the top of the fourth, which increased Monmouth's lead to 5-0.
  • A two-out rally in fourth cut Marist's deficit to 5-2. Shea Walsh beat out an infield single, and came home on an RBI double by Alyssa Yarem. Hunter Hand's RBI single brought home Yarem.
  • An RBI double by Katie Harrington, followed by an RBI single by Coreth, extended Monmouth's lead to 7-2.
  • The Red Foxes left the bases loaded in the sixth, and left 11 on in the contest.
  • Kylie Gletow (4-2) pitched a complete game for Monmouth. She allowed eight hits and just two walks which striking out six.
  • Walsh and Hand each had two hits for Marist.
 
Records
  • Monmouth is now 11-5 overall.
  • Marist stands at 1-3.
