Marist Splits Doubleheader at Fairfield

Late-Inning Comeback Propels Red Foxes In Game One

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Fairfield on Thursday.
 
The Red Foxes trailed by four runs with four outs to go in game one, and then came back to earn a 6-4 victory. Another comeback in game two tied the game in the top of the seventh, but Fairfield earned a 2-1 walk-off victory in the bottom half.
 
Game One Summary
Marist 6, Fairfield 4 – W: Meghan Haff (2-0), L: Lauryn Rhinehart (4-5)
  • Fairfield scored a pair of runs in both the third and fifth, but the score was kept to 4-0 when Marist left fielder Alyssa Grupp threw a runner out at the plate to end the fifth.
  • Marist had two outs with none on in the top of the sixth, and then started a three-run rally. Miah McDonald singled, and scored on a Kaley Coltrain double. Ali Milam's single knocked in pinch-runner Hannah Brock. Shea Walsh followed with a triple that brought home Milam.
  • Marist then struck for three more runs in the top of the seventh. Sam Freeland's sacrifice fly brought home Hailee Jantorno. McDonald's double brought in Caroline Baratta and gave Marist its first lead. Coltrain followed with a single, which scored McDonald.
  • Meghan Haff pitched 2.2 innings of relief for the win. Haff retired the final five Stags she faced. Starter Nicole Teague struck out four in 4.1 innings.
  • Sam Merino went 3-for-4 for Fairfield.
 
Game Two Summary
Fairfield 2, Marist 1 – W: Katie Kudlacik (5-1), L: Calista Phippen (1-3)
  • The game was scoreless until Megan Forbes homered with two outs in the bottom of the fourth for Fairfield.
  • Kaley Coltrain walked to lead off the top of the seventh, and was pinch-run for by Hunter Hand, who advanced to third on a double by Milam. With two outs, Hand scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at one.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Kasey Sekula's double brought home Alexa Ortman with the game-winning run.
  • Calista Phippen struck out six, did not walk anyone, and allowed just five hits. Phippen retired the first eight Stags she faced.
  • Katie Kudlacik pitched a complete game for Fairfield. She allowed six hits and two walks, and struck out four.
