Men’s Tennis Falls In MAAC Semifinals

No. 4 Marist Drops Match To No. 1 Monmouth

WEST WINDSOR, New Jersey – In the 2021 MAAC Championships, fourth-seeded Marist couldn't upset top-ranked Monmouth as the Hawks won 4-0 in the semifinals on Saturday morning at the Mercer County Tennis Center.

 
Monmouth moves on to play No. 2 Fairfield, who advanced after their match was declared a no contest due to COVID-19 disruptions within third seed Quinnipiac's program, in the championship. The Red Foxes conclude their season at 2-1.

  • The Hawks captured the doubles point with wins in the first and third flights.
  • First, senior Piotr Sowinski and junior Jack Sequerth fell 2-6 to Will Cooke Wharton and Charles Gourtzounian in the third spot.
  • Monmouth's Max Benaim and Sergio Martinez swept junior Dylan Friedman and freshman Gabriel Castillo in the top billing.
  • In second doubles, senior captain John Oxner and senior Nestor Giribet Lopez trailed 2-5 to Victor Castro and Lucca Silva before the match was clinched.

  • Monmouth secured sixth, third, and first singles in that order to seal the win.
  • Junior Augusto Bonorino fell in straight sets to Gabriel Busto in the sixth flight, 1-6, 0-6.
  • In the third position, Castillo couldn't overcome Castro, 1-6, 3-6.
  • Cooke Wharton edged Friedman 4-6, 4-6 in the top spot.
  • After dropping the first set 3-6, Oxner beat Benaim 6-4 in the second before the match was declared unfinished.
  • Giribet Lopez (fourth singles, 5-7, 3-5 to Silva) and Sowinski (fifth singles 6-7, 2-3 to Martinez) also did not complete their duels.
