Phippen, Coltrain Lift Softball to Game One Win vs. Siena

Red Foxes Earn Split Against Saints

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Siena on Wednesday afternoon at Gartland Field.
 
Calista Phippen tossed a shutout in Marist's 2-0 game one triumph. The Red Foxes bounced back twice to tie the second game, but fell 4-3 in nine innings.
 
Game One Summary
Marist 2, Siena 0 – W: Calista Phippen (3-4), L: Nicole Patille (2-3)
  • Marist scored the game's lone runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run, one-out single by Kaley Coltrain, which brought home Caroline Baratta and Sam Freeland.
  • Siena did not advance a runner to third base the entire game. The Saints had first and second with one out on the first, but Phippen responded with back-to-back strikeouts.
  • Phippen tossed a three-hitter, walked one, and struck out seven.
  • Coltrain went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
  • Nicole Patille pitched a complete game for Siena. She struck out five and allowed just four hits and two walks.
 
Game Two Summary
Siena 4, Marist 3 (9 innings) – W: Taylor Rhinehart (2-3), L: Nicole Teague (1-2), S: Allison Speshyock (1)
  • Neither team had a hit in the first two innings; neither team scored in the first four.
  • In the top of the fifth, back-to-back RBI singles by Maritza Diaz and Emma McLaughlin staked Siena to a 2-0 lead.
  • Caroline Baratta's two-run, two-out homer in the fifth tied the game at two. Baratta's homer brought home Hailee Jantorno, who capped an eight-pitch at-bat with a walk.
  • Isabelle DeChiaro's RBI single in the eighth gave Siena a 3-2 lead, but Coltrain homered to left-center on a 3-2 pitch with one-out in the bottom of the eighth.
  • McLaughlin's infield groundout in the top of the ninth brought home Yamila Evans with what proved to be the winning run. Marist had runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth, but was unable to tie the game.
  • Coltrain (2-for-3, home run, walk) and Baratta (1-for-3, home run, two walks) each reached safely three times.
  • Meghan Haff started and did not allow an earned run in five-plus innings for Marist. Nicole Teague allowed just one earned run in four innings of relief.
  • Siena starter Maddie McMahon struck out six in five-plus innings. Winning pitcher Taylor Rhinehart struck out five in 3.2 innings of relief. Allison Speshyock got the game's final out for the save.
 
Notes
  • Coltrain went 5-for-6 with three RBIs in the doubleheader.
  • Coltrain has a five-game hitting streak and has reached safely in 12 straight games. In her last four games, she is 8-for-11 (.727) with two homers and seven RBIs.
  • Phippen has tossed back-to-back shutouts. In 12 innings over those two outings, she has allowed four hits and one walk while striking out seven.
  • In seven of Marist's 14 games this season, the winning team has scored the go-ahead run in its final at-bat.
