POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader from Saint Peter's at Gartland Field on Friday afternoon. The Red Foxes won the first game, 7-3, and took the second one via the mercy rule, 12-2 in six innings.
The Red Foxes stole five bases in game one, and hit four homers in game two.
Marist 7, Saint Peter's 3 – W: Calista Phippen (4-4), L: Sophie Wilson (1-3)
- Marist scored twice in the bottom of the first. Caroline Baratta and Miah McDonald executed a double steal to score Baratta. McDonald then came home later in the inning.
- After Saint Peter's cut Marist's lead in half in the top of the second, the Red Foxes re-claimed a two-run lead on a bunt by Hailee Jantorno, which brought home Shea Walsh.
- Anja Solveig Kane's RBI single in the fourth brought home Maiah Skakal and made it 3-2.
- The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Red Foxes exploded for four runs. Shea Walsh had an RBI double, Julia Blarr had an RBI single, and two runs scored on errors.
- Saint Peter's scored the game's final run on the seventh as Skakal came home on a groundout.
- Calista Phippen pitched a complete game and struck out six. She did not walk anyone, and just one of the three runs she allowed was earned.
- Walsh went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
- Skakal scored all three of the Peacocks' runs, and went 2-for-3.
Marist 12, Saint Peter's 2 (6 inn.) – W: Meghan Haff (4-0), L: Taylor Rondon (0-3)
- Baratta led off the game with a double, and Sam Freeland followed with a single. After McDonald's groundout brought home Baratta, Kaley Coltrain's two-run homer gave Marist a 3-0 lead. Julia Blarr's sacrifice fly later in the inning put the Red Foxes up 4-0 after one.
- Saint Peter's cut its deficit in the half in the second on Cara McNulty's two-run double.
- After McDonald walked and Coltrain doubled to start the Marist third, Ali Milam's three-run homer put the Red Foxes up 7-2.
- Milam's second homer of the game increased Marist's lead to 8-2 in the fifth.
- In the bottom of the sixth, pinch-hitter Meghan Davis delivered a grand slam to give Marist a 10-run lead, and end the game via the mercy rule.
- Milam went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
- Meghan Haff tossed a two-hitter, struck out four, and did not walk anyone.
- In her last three starts, Phippen is 3-0 with an 0.37 ERA. She has 15 strikeouts and one walk in 19 innings.
- Milam now has 28 home runs, which moves her into a tie for fifth place in program history.
- Coltrain has five straight multi-hit games. In this span, she is 11-for-16 (.688) with three home runs and nine RBIs. She has reached base safely in 14 straight games, and is now hitting .465 this season.
- Walsh went 4-for-5 on the day, and is now hitting .447.
- Marist will play a four-game series at Iona this weekend.
- The Red Foxes and Gaels will play doubleheaders starting at noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
- All four games will be shown on the ESPN Family of Networks.
