Softball Captures Game One at Iona

Coltrain Homers In Both Contests

NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Iona on Sunday.
 
The Red Foxes prevailed 12-3 in six innings via the mercy rule in game one. The Gaels rebounded for a 7-1 win in game two. Kaley Coltrain homered in both games for Marist.
 
Game One Summary
Marist 12, Iona 3 (6 inn.) – W: Calista Phippen (5-5), L: Alana Evans (0-2)
  • Marist started the scoring with a three-run first as Caroline Baratta stole home, Sam Freeland scored on Shea Walsh's infield single, and Hannah Brock came in on Julia Blarr's bunt.
  • Hailee Jantorno singled to lead off the second, and came home on a fielder's choice, which put Marist up 4-0.
  • Marist added four in the fifth, which included a two-run homer by Ali Milam.
  • Trailing 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Iona kept the game going with a three-run inning, which included a two-run single by Courtney Blasko.
  • Marist tacked on four more in the sixth. Kaley Coltrain belted a three-run homer, and Blarr added an RBI single. The Red Foxes held the Gaels scoreless in the bottom half of the inning and ended the game via the mercy rule.
  • Marist pounded out 16 hits. Walsh went 4-for-4. Baratta, Freeman, Milam, and Meghan Davis each added two.
  • Calista Phippen did not allow a hit in the first 4.1 innings. She finished with a four-hitter and eight strikeouts against just one walk.
 
Game Two Summary
Iona 7, Marist 3 – W: Kara Zazzaro (17-2), L: Meghan Haff (4-1)
  • Coltrain hit a solo homer in the top of the first.
  • Iona answered with four runs in the bottom of the first on one hit. The Gaels drew three walks, including two with the bases loaded.
  • The Gaels add three runs in the fourth, two coming on a single by Ciarra DiGuilio.
  • Marist rallied for two runs in the seventh. Coltrain's two-out RBI double brought in Baratta, and Milam followed with an RBI single.
  • Coltrain finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a homer, and a double. Baratta went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and run scored.
  • Nicole Teague struck out four in 4.2 innings of relief.
  • Kara Zazzaro pitched a complete game for Iona.
 
Stats/Notes
  • Marist's 16 hits in game one were a season high.
  • Milam's home run in game one was the 29th of her career, moving her into a tie with Jessica Green for fourth place on the program's all-time list.
  • With a homer in each game, Coltrain now leads the team with six. She has five home runs in her last nine games.
  • The Gaels took three out of four in the series.
