Five Red Foxes Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Teams

Coueslant, Gervasio, Mehalick, Oxner, & Carrington Earn Prestigious Honor

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Esabelle Gervasio and Murray Coueslant of the Marist Swimming & Diving program, Samantha Mehalick of the Marist Women's Lacrosse program, John Oxner of the Marist Tennis program, and Shinae Carrington of the Marist Water Polo program were named CoSIDA Academic All-District via the 2020-21, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.

Coueslant had a solid career in the pool for the Red Foxes, highlighted by winning a silver medal in the 800-yard free relay at the 2019-20 MAAC Championships. The computer science major shined outside of the pool as well, winning both the Marist President's Academic Achievement Award and James E. Pizzani Awards. He graduated cum laude & won the Dr. Will Cadden Achievement Award for Excellence in Computer Science. In addition, Coueslant was a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society, earned an honors medal from Marist, and was a three-time member of the MAAC All-Academic Team.

Gervasio is one of the greatest divers in the history of the Marist swimming & diving program. She was a three-time ECAC Diver of the Meet, two-time MAAC Diver of the Meet, and one-time MAAC Rookie Diver of the Meet to go along with nine MAAC Diver of the Week honors. In the classroom, Gervasio was also a star earning three MAAC All-Academic Team honors. The chemistry major also won the Mary Lou Gantert Award for Excellence in Science to go along with an honors medal for her senior thesis. Gervasio also conducted faculty-sponsored research in two labs, which contributed to two publications.

Mehalick is perhaps the greatest attack in the history of Marist women's lacrosse, but what is not up for debate is that she is the greatest goal scorer Marist has ever seen. The business administration major scored 232 career goals which is the most in program and conference history, and was the first player to break the 200-career goal milestone. She is also second on the program's all-time points list with 248, and holds the program/conference records for single-season and single-game goals with 79 and 11, respectively, in 2019. To her name, Mehalick owns two All-MAAC First Team selections, four All-MAAC honors, and seven MAAC weekly award honors. She also was a four-time MAAC All-Academic selection and a one-time member of the ECAC Academic Honor Roll.

Carrington played a pivotal role in the Marist water polo teams 2021 MAAC Championship. The political science major scored 18 goals to go with four assists in the shortened season, and was an All-MAAC first Team Selection and MAAC All-Championship Team selection. In the first year she was eligible, Carrington was also named to the MAAC All-Academic Team and ACWPC All-America Honorable Mention.

Oxner was a 2020-21 team captain for the men's tennis program, and ecorded 56 career wins in three seasons for the Red Foxes. The three-time MAAC All-Academic Team honoree helped guide Marist to two appearances in the MAAC Championships in his career. His best season came during his sophomore year, where he recorded 21 wins in singles play and 14 in doubles. In his junior year, he was the co-champion of the "C" flight at the Fordham Four-In-The-Fall tournament. Off the court, Oxner served as a team representative for Marist's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Oxner was recognized as the tennis program's 2021 Sportsperson of the Year honoree.

Marist has now had 10 CoSIDA Academic All-District selections in the 2020-21 school year. Here are the previous honorees:

  • June 3: Nicole Sasso, women's soccer
  • June 10: Nick Foglia & Max Heinrich, football
  • July 1: Caroline Baratta & Shea Walsh, softball

To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve at their current institution with a cumulative 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Carrington, Coueslant, Gervasio, Mehalick, and Oxner were all named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large First Team, and all Frst-Team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in early August.
