Marist Men’s Basketball Wins Shorthanded at Fairfield

Red Foxes Pick Up the MAAC Road Win Against Conference Foe

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – The Marist men's basketball team picked up a 60-51 victory over the Fairfield Stags, Friday evening at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport Connecticut. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
 
SUMMARY
  • Down to seven scholarship players after the loss of four players to COVID-19 health & safety protocols and one player to injury, the Red Foxes started a lineup of Noah Harris, Ricardo Wright, Samkelo Cele, Matt Herasme, and Jordan Jones. Javon Cooley and Braden Bell played key minutes off the bench.
  • Behind a spirited start, the Red Foxes would jump out to an 18-10 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half. They would eventually extend their lead to 29-16 before allowing Fairfield to battle back and make it a seven-point game, 32-25, before halftime.
  • Fairfield came out strong in the second half, eventually tying the game at 35-35 while holding Marist to a nine-minute scoring drought.
  • After a timeout, Marist would rattle off a 21-2 run spanning from the 13:02 minute mark to 5:47 left in the game, taking complete control of the game.
  • Fairfield would close out the game on a 14-4 run of their own, but the damage was done as the Red Foxes would cruise to the nine-point victory.
STATS
  • Marist held Fairfield to 17-for-60 (.283) shooting from the field and 6-for-31 (.194) from three.
  • The Red Foxes outrebounded the Stags by one (41-40), had one more assist (9-8), and tied the turnover battle (12-12).
  • The Red Foxes also outscored the Stags in bench points 16-9 and had a 6-2 advantage in blocked shots.
  • Marist had four players finish in double-digits scoring, Ricardo Wright (17), Braden Bell (14), Samkelo Cele (12), and Jordan Jones (10).
  • Marist controlled the paint, outscoring the Stags 34-20 down low.
  • The Red Foxes largest lead of the game was 19 at the 5:47 minute mark of the second half.
NOTES
  • Marist has now won consecutive games in Bridgeport after its last victory on the road against the Stags in the 2019-20 season.
  • The Red Foxes have now held their opposition to sub 40 percent shooting in their last eight contests.
  • This is the third straight game a Red Foxes' opponent has shot under 25 percent from three point range.
