Rider Prevails Over Marist In MAAC Action

Marist Men’s Basketball Falls to Broncs in Sunday Afternoon Matinee

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Behind hot shooting from the field, the Rider Broncs pushed past the Marist Red Foxes, 79-75, Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena. Despite a balanced offensive effort and five players scoring in double-digits the Red Foxes were unable to battle back and secure their second win of the weekend.

SUMMARY
  • Starting with the same lineup they had against Fairfield on Friday, the Red Foxes got some extra reinforcement off the bench this game to push their roster back up to nine scholarship players.
  • Raheim Sullivan made his return from COVID-19 protocols and Tyler Saint-Furcy returned from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the last few games.
  • The Broncs would jump ahead early with two separate leads of 16 at the 10-minute mark and the seven-minute mark.
  • Marist would use a 21-4 run over the next six minutes to retake the lead at 39-38 right before halftime. Rider would notch one more bucket to head into the break leading by one, 40-39.
  • The teams would come out of halftime battling, Rider pushed ahead by five but Marist would come back again and knot the score at 51-51 with 11:50 to go.
  • The Broncs then got hot again, going on a 14-0 run that lasted over five minutes to extend their lead to 65-51.
  • Not to be deterred, Marist then responded with a 14-4 run to cut the Rider lead down to 68-64 with just under three minutes to go. The teams would trade punches from there as Rider pushed their lead up to seven with :16 seconds remaining.
  • A Sullivan three and an ensuing Marist steal and Samkelo Cele dunk would cut the lead back down to two, but Rider's Murray would sink two free-throws to give the Broncs the margin needed to hold on for the win.
