FAIRFIELD, Connecticut -Â The Marist volleyball team took down first-place Fairfield in five sets on Wednesday.
Marist battled back and forth with the Stags for control of the match, trading sets. The Red Foxes were able to prevail by scores of 21-25, 25-11, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13.
Marist split the season series with Fairfield, and now stands at 11-8 overall and 7-2 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes are just one game back of Fairfield as they sit in a tie for second place.

- The Red Foxes were able to keep it close with Fairfield in set one; however the Stags were able to pull out the set by a score of 25-21.
- In set two the Red Foxes got off to a hot start and never looked back as they were able win the set by a score of 25-11. It marked the first set the Stags lost in MAAC play this season.
- Set three saw Fairfield getting an early lead on the Red Foxes as the Stags won 25-21 and took the match lead 2-1.
- Set four saw Gabrielle Heller and Sasha van der Merwe getting it done for the Red Foxes as Marist won set three by a score of 25-23.
- The fifth set saw the Red Foxes & Stags juggle for the lead the Red Foxes were able to cap off the five-set victory, winning the fifth set with a score of 15-13.
- It was a great all-around match for Heller, who had a match-high 25 kills plus 10 digs and hit .393.
- Jordan Newblatt finished with nine kills and a match-high 19 digs, while van der Merwe had 16 kills, 10 digs, and nine blocks.
- McKinley Fox led both teams with 47 assists.
- The Red Foxes take on MAAC opponent Canisius on Saturday, Oct. 15 at McCann Arena at 6 p.m.
