POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's lacrosse program has announced its 2023 schedule. The Red Foxes will play 14 games during the regular season with six of them being at Tenney Stadium and eight on the road.
Â
For the second consecutive year, the Red Foxes will open the season against Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Big Ten opponent was a 2022 NCAA Final Four participant and ended their season ranked No. 4 in the media polls. In last year's matchup on Feb. 9, the Red Foxes were defeated 13-10 at Rutgers, but certainly proved that they could compete with one of the best in the nation.
Â
Marist will then host Binghamton for their home opener on Saturday, Feb. 11. The Bearcats had a strong season making the America East Semifinal in 2022, however the Red Foxes have won the last six matchups against them, including last year's game when Marist beat them 11-9 at Binghamton. Before this win streak began, Marist had never beaten them in any of their first five meetings from 2007 to 2011. That next week, Marist will head down to Jacksonville to play the Dolphins on Saturday, Feb. 18. Jacksonville finished No. 18 in the media polls, however they ranked as high as seventh at one point of the season. Marist has an all-time record of 3-0 against the Dolphins, with their last matchup being in 2013.
Â
The Red Foxes will finish out their non-conference games with a home game versus Bellarmine on Sunday, Feb. 26 and followed by a trip to Lewisburg, PA to play Bucknell on Saturday, March 4. This will be the first time in history that Marist will match up against Bellarmine, who fell to Utah 12-11 in the ASUN semifinal this past year. The Red Foxes will have another challenge against the Bucknell Bison as they have never beaten them in program history. In last year's matchup the Bisons prevailed 15-7 over Marist on Feb. 26.
Â
Marist will open MAAC play on March 11 at home in Tenney Stadium against Wagner. The Seahawks are one of four new MAAC members for this upcoming 2023 season. The Red Foxes hold an all time record of 11-0 versus the former MAAC rival but they have not met since their last matchup in 2010.
Â
Marist will travel up to Buffalo for the second year in a row to take on Canisius on March 18. The Red Foxes will be on the road again to play Quinnipiac on March 25, is a rematch of a game that aired on national television in 2022, which Marist won 17-11. That following Wednesday, March 29, the Red Foxes will return home to host Sacred Heart, another new MAAC member for the season.
Â
April starts with an away game at Manhattan to take on the reigning MAAC Champions for a chance to redeem themselves after losing to them in the MAAC Tournament semifinals. On Saturday, April 8 the Red Foxes will play Mount St. Mary's at Tenney for the first time since they've rejoined the MAAC. The Mount won the first 11 out of 12 matchups up until 2003 when Marist began their five-game winning streak between 2004-09. The two have not met since 2009. With a quick turnaround after the Mount, Marist will head up to Albany to play MAAC rival Siena on Wednesday, April 12.
Â
The Red Foxes will round out their regular season games to play the last two new members of the MAAC. The team will head out to Long Island to play LIU on Saturday, April 22. The Sharks finished with a record of 7-8 after losing 11-10 in the 2022 NEC semifinals to the soon-to-be champions, St. Joseph's. Finally the Red Foxes will conclude their season with a game at Tenney Stadium as they host another previous MAAC rival, VMI. Marist won the last seven out of eight matchups, with their last one being in 2013.
Â
The MAAC Tournament this season will take place over the course of two weekends, as the tournament has expanded to a six team format, with the quarterfinal round starting action on April 29. The highest seeded full MAAC member will host the quarterfinal winners and top two seeds at the tournament semifinals and championship on May 4-6. Another year for Marist to contend for the 2023 MAAC Championship, and this time with new competition.
