LONDON, England – The Marist men's basketball team came back to defeat Maine, 62-61, in the Basketball Hall of Fame London Showcase on Sunday at O2 Arena.
The Red Foxes trailed by six with 2:49 to play, but they outscored Maine 9-2 the rest of the way and did not allow a field goal in that stretch.
- Patrick Gardner scored nine straight Marist points in the early going, as the Red Foxes took an 11-6 lead three-and-a-half minutes in.
- The Red Foxes led by six in the first half on three occasions.
- A 6-0 Maine run tied the game at 20 at the 7:42 mark. A jumper by Kam Farris broke the tie 26 seconds later, and Marist's lead stayed between one and four for the rest of the half.
- Gardner scored Marist's last five points of the half, and the Red Foxes took a 31-28 lead to the locker room.
- Ja'Shonte Wright-McLeish tied the game with a three-pointer at the 16:30 mark, but Marist answered with a 7-0 run to take its largest lead of the game. Gardner had five points in the run, including a three-point play.
- Peter Filipovity gave Maine its first lead of the game at 46-45 on a three-point play with 8:54 remaining. The Black Bears scored 11 straight points to extend their lead to five with 7:26 to go.
- A three-pointer by Gardner tied the score with 5:42 left, but Maine answered with six straight points for its largest lead of the game. The Black Bears led 59-53 with 2:49 left.
- A layup and three-pointer by Farris in a 55-second span brought Marist to within one, and Gardner's basket with 54 seconds left put the Red Foxes up 60-59.
- Ata Turgat's two free throws with 41 seconds left put Maine back in the lead, but Farris' putback of his own miss in traffic gave Marist a one-point lead with 21 seconds left. The Red Foxes then got stops on Maine's final two possessions to close out the game.
- Gardner finished with 27 points, nine rebounds, two blocked shots, and a steal. He shot 11-for-16 from the field, 4-for-7 from three-point range, and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. He was named the game's Most Valuable Player.
- Farris finished with 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field. He scored seven points in Marist's final push, which came in a span of 2:19.
- Isaiah Brickner had eight points, five assists, and three rebounds. He was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
- Marist held Maine to .188 (3-for-16) shooting from three-point range, and .421 (24-for-57) from the field. The Red Foxes forced the Black Bears to miss their last six shots from the field.
- Gardner's 27 points and four three-pointers were both season highs.
- Brickner tied his career high with five assists. He has reached that mark in each of his last two games.
- This was the sixth meeting between Marist and Maine in school history. The Red Foxes are now 5-1 in the series with five straight victories.
- Marist is now 3-0 all-time in Europe. The Red Foxes previously went 2-0 in the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic in Northern Ireland in 2018.
- Marist is now 4-4 this season. The Red Foxes have won three straight.
- Maine now stands at 4-4.
- Marist returns home to McCann Arena to face Boston University of the Patriot League on Saturday, Dec. 10.
