POUGHKEEPSIE, New York--The Marist men's rowing team departs Thursday on their way to its first official competition of 2022 at the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, CA. The team will be sending two eights (Varsity and 2
nd Varsity) to compete at the event, only the 2
nd time in program history that Marist has attended.
The San Diego Crew Classic was started in 1973 by members of the ZLAC rowing club and San Diego Rowing Club. Over the years, the event has grown in size and scope and has earned a prestigious reputation as an early season opportunity for crews from around the country to try their strength. In particular the event became a favorite for east coast teams looking for an opportunity to see west coast opponents in the early season.
Marist last attended nearly 30 years ago in 1993 and will be returning to the regatta for the first time since then. The team will be facing off against 13 other crews from around the USA. Of particular note among this group are varsity IRA competitors Bates, Marietta, and MIT from the east coast, Gonzaga, UCSD, and USD from the west coast and strong club teams from Purdue, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and Orange Coast.

"The men's crew is excited to have an opportunity to race on the west coast. The Crew Classic is a great event and gives us the chance to see competitors that we don't ordinarily race in the regular season. The crews are just coming off of our spring training trip in Clemson, SC and we're excited to see what we're capable of on Mission Bay!"- Campbell Woods, Head Coach, Men's Rowing
