Men’s Lacrosse Tops NJIT in Overtime

Lyons Scores Game Winner, Pirreca Totals Six Points

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's lacrosse team defeated out-of-conference opponent NJIT on Tuesday in an overtime thriller by a final score of 12-11 at Tenney Stadium. 
 
Summary
 
  • Kellen Pulera scored the first goal of the game for the Red Foxes with 9:30 in the first quarter, assisted by Jojo Pirreca.
  • An assist from James Lyons to Jason Intermesoli gave the Red Foxes an early two-goal lead.
  • NJIT called a time out and responded quickly, scoring two unanswered goals to tie the game up, 2-2.
  • Pirreca and Pulera linked up again, to give the Red Foxes a 3-2 lead. Pulera had the goal and Pirreca notched the assist on the play. 
  • With under three minutes in the first quarter Pirreca put the Red Foxes up by two again, 4-2. The goal was assisted by James Lyons.
  • To start off the second quarter, Hunter Embury scored for the Red Foxes to extend their lead 5-2.
  • NJIT answered with three unanswered goals of their own to tie the game at 5. The fourth goal for NJIT was a man up tally.
  • Intermesoli scored his second goal of the game to put the Red Foxes up by one, 6-5.
  • In a back-and-forth half NJIT again scored three unanswered goals to close out the half, giving them an 8-6 lead after 30 minutes.
  • Pirreca got the Red Foxes started off in the third quarter with a quick man up goal from the face off at 14:46 on the clock, assisted by Intermesoli.
  • Pirreca scored again, giving him the hat trick to tie the game 8-8.
  • NJIT took the lead, 9-8, but a Red Fox goal by Pulera assisted by Intermesoli tied the game back up 9-9.
  • NJIT took the lead, 10-9, and held onto it for the remainder of the third quarter. 
  • With 9:34 left in the fourth quarter, Pulera scores his fourth goal of the game to tie it up for the Red Foxes, 10-10.
  • NJIT scored to take a 11-10 lead.
  • Embury scored a man up goal to tie it 11-11. Embury's second goal of the game was assisted by Pirreca.
  • The game could not be decided in regular time and went to overtime with the score 11-11.
  • James Lyons ended the game with an overtime goal at the 2:34 mark, as Marist won 12-11.

  • Pirreca and Pulera both had hat tricks for the Red Foxes. Pulera scored four goals in the game, and now both have 22 goals scored on the season.
  • Pirreca led the Red Foxes with six points, three goals and three assists.
  • Pulera, Lyons (one goal, three assists), and Intermesoli (two goals, two assists) all had four points.
  • Marist outshot NJIT, 56-37.
  • NJIT goalie Liam Brown had 21 saves. Anthony Novellano stopped 13 shots for the Red Foxes.
